I came across an ebay auction for Motorized Alps 100K Pots.  I figure those technically inclined could use them for projects since he is offering multiple ones.

Boy, I would love a remote control volume on my Philly 7A preamp.  Is this something I would use a motorized pot for?

Yes!  In theory it isn't a very complicated problem.  I just am still learning electronics, so this isn't completely trivial for me.  Check out this link here for a remote volume kit.  altronic's kit fyi, that is about $35 USD.

If you want to be a guineau pig, you can order the remote kit and then bring your kit and your philly preamp to my place and I will help you install it.

Yeah, that would be great.  I could also bring it to George's and it could be a NY Rave bonus activity in July.  Either way,  I'll order it and let you know when it arrives.  I'm really not willing to try this alone so I appreciate your offer.

It's sad how dependent I have become on remotes.

I have done a number of small projects for other members of NYaudioRave.  I enjoy the learning experience.  I am sure we can hook it up pro-like.  I even have a drill press so we can set the IR receiver in the face sharply.

I was going to add the Bent stepped attenuator remote to my preamp but I couldn't get it to fit behind my Elma switch.  So I did a little reading about how it was suppose to work and where to tap the power from.  I guess that means that we aren't exactly blind going into this.

You might want to order the motorized Alps pot that I mentioned on ebay because I have no idea whether the pot that the kit comes with is any good.  If it is and you don't need the Alps pot, I'll buy it off you for some other project.  It would suck to add the remote and degrade the sound because the pot stinks.  Since it is only $12, you aren't going to loose much anyway.

Hello Joe !! Well look at that, another Philly owner. Nice preamp ! There's a few others (byteme, Gordy, myself) on AudioCircle that own it as well. And with a few good tubes, this preamp really shines !  And if it can go remote, all the better !! :)

Hey Guys,
Please let us know how things worked out with the kit quality and installation.  Meanwhile, I may grab one of those Alps off ebay. . .

There is an alternative to drilling up an existing preamp for a remote install.  You can place the motorized pot in the pre and send the 2 wires for the motor out the rear and into a small box that the receiver and IR head can mount.  I've done this type thing into vintage Marantz 7C - etc, without any damage or extra holes and it's perfectly reversible.  Just a thought :)

Lonewolf,

The philly is a nice preamp and the price is right.  I haven't played with the tubes yet.  What tubes are you using?

Josh,

The first DIY link you posted won't ship unless I order >$100 worth of stuff.  What should we do.

I like the idea of not drilling or damaging my preamp's casing as suggested by ScottNixon

This is the email I was sent:

"Hello Sir,

We do have those kits in stock but we have a minimum $100 AUD for international orders."

Hmmm.....anyone else looking for one of these kits that lives in the states?  Maybe we could do a small group order and then ship from here in the states when they arrive.  I will take one.

The kit in question is carried by other merchants. I found this out when I ordered mine. BTW, the quality of the kit is excellent.

For the really adventurous I am grafting a high end pot (TKD) to an inexpensive Alpha motorized pot (US $9.95 from Digikey or Mouser, can't remember off hand which). This actually isn't going to be too difficult and should result in a very good motorized pot. I will post pictures in the Lab once it's complete. I still need to pick up some 0-80 bolts to use as studs to couple the shafts...

Never mind, I was thinking of a different kit...

One more option if money isn't a problem. Audio Electronic Supply offers a complete kit using the ALPS pot. It appears to be what they use in their gear (and probably the Cary stuff as well)
