I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I did a search and couldn't see anything.  Is this possible?

You can get an adapter to the headphone jack that turns into two RCA plugs and plug them into an analog connector.  Their cheap

You can get somewhat better sound by using an LOD (Line Out Dock) cable that attaches to the 30-pin dock connector and is a line level signal bypassing the internal headphone amplifier.
 
Of course you could likely get even better sound with a digital dock such as the Pure i-20 dock and using the coaxial or optical digital output into a digital input on the SP 1.7 and use its DAC.

If you have one of the new iDevices with the new Lightning connector instead of the old 30-pin dock connector (iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5th generation, iPod Nano 7th generation or iPad 4th generation) you would need the Lightning to 30-pin adapter.

I'm using a wadia 170i dock plugged into the bda1 into the sp1.7
pretty amazing.....put the full file on your ipod and the wadia bypasses the ipod internal dac
very surprized at the sound quality

+1 on the Pure I-20 dock. It has a decent DAC and works very well when you connect an outboard (external) DAC to it.
 I have two and think they are a great value audio product. I don't use my older Squeezebox anymore...
