This band Dorje, I've been following. They are brand new out of England, you can't even get an album yet, they just started their first tour. The lead guy is Rob Chapman. Discovered from starting guitar, and Rob Chapman and this other guy have well over a thousand video's demonstrating gear (very unbiased and thorough, I might add). Rob has his own guitar line and now his own signature tube amplifier as well.

Anyway, their band, they aren't much to look at, but all of these guys (I know from watching now a good 30 or 40 gear demo videos) can shred your face off. Rob can play any style with alacrity, even chicken picking. The bass player can play several types of instruments.

I think this rock band of theirs will go places or at least gain a solid cult following. They don't look pretty enough to be major stars, but they can play:

Yeah, I've had that video on repeat more than a few times. You can't even get the EP anymore, it was only available for a donation to fund their tour.

Not sure if I am reading the OP correctly. If we are talking about bands not known for their looks, ie: Nothing special, and the marketing machine wasn't really trading on it, I would start off with Dire Straits, Steely Dan, & Supertramp.

If we are talking about, "Dang, these guys look _rough_," I can't go into the theatrical aspect (Slipknot), because they are in fact known for a certainly nasty look. Lemmy trades on his to some extent... The only ones that immediately come to mind are Lemmy's previous outfit, Hawkwind, and another British mainstay Tony McPhee (The Groundhogs).
