Help: Plitron toroidal transformer wires
« on: 21 Jun 2004, 10:13 pm »
Has anyone connected their AKSA 100 to a Plitron transf.  Part #077019201?  It has four input and four output wires.  Which of these to use? Input- blk/wht brn/orn.  Output- red/yel blue/gry.
What colors to use for ac1 ac2 and star earth.  What colors are for IEC entry? Their connection schematics are here: http://www.plitron.com/pages/Products/Std/schemati.htm

Thanks

Carlman

When I wired mine, it was like this:
Primaries:
brown/black twisted together and white/orange twisted together... one to hot one to neutral but I don't remember which.

Secondaries:
Yello/blue twisted together from both torroids to star earth

Red to AC1 gray to AC2.

That's what I have in mine.  I think they're the same as yours... someone else can chime in if that sounds right/wrong per the schematic.

One more thing, in order to test properly, both transformers need to be hooked up and grounded properly to get the desired voltage.  That may sound ridiculously obvious but I tried doing it one at a time.  And that was frustrating.

edited for accuracy ;)

Thanks for reply. You mention blue wire in both primary and secondary and there's only one.  Do you mean I should split it?  Also, what to do with unused wire? Just insulate and leave or cut them off?

Hi Narius,

Pardon my delay.

This stuff is tricky because I can't see the documentation, but here goes:

Primary:

Black connect to Brown:  this is ACTIVE
White connect to Orange:  this is NEUTRAL

Secondary:

Yellow connect to Blue:  this is STAR EARTH
Red:  this is AC1
Grey:  this is AC2.

Leaving the secondaries unconnected, set up the primary leads as above and connect up to the mains.  Make sure this circuit is fused.  Stand clear, and throw the switch.

Now, if all is well, measure from AC1 to AC2 (red to grey).  It should be around 70Vac on the AC setting on the volt meter.

Now measure AC1 to star earth, and AC2 to star earth.  Both should be 35Vac.  If this all checks out, you are correctly wired.

Hope this is helpful....... and thanks to Carlman for his valued input!

Cheers,

Hugh

First of all thanks Hugh and Carlmen for input.  I just hooked the primaries up and took a reading.  Red(AC1) and grey(AC2) show 72.9 And AC1 or AC2 to star earth show 36.2.  Now, is this not too high, it should be around 70 and 35.

Narius,

Looking good.  Higher readings indicate over voltage on the mains;  this is usual in most western countries, so don't be concerned.

Toroids are normally tested to around 4000Vac, so they should be OK!

Cheers,

Hugh
