Switching between 33 and 45 rpm on the WTA

Anybody have a preferred method of doing this that they consider especially safe and easy on the belt? I just snapped a belt and am now feeling a little reluctant to do any more switching, which obviously is not good.

I use the handle of a stylus cleaning brush to push the string from one position to another while it is running.  This moves it sideways without actually grabbing it, since the string slides easily past the handle while being pushed.

Once the belt/string came off but it has never broken.

I noticed that when stopping the Versalex to change speeds from 33 to 45 it takes a while to ramp up to the correct 45 rpm. Self assisting the platter with a finger at start up is it good or bad?

Once the turntable is started is it okay to leave on all day?

The Firebaugh and Mr Pranka method is to help the platter along at startup - not sure if it's just to give it some love, or those two are just fidgety or what.

When I'm home all day mines on, so I see no harm.  A Linn and Rega were always best kept going.
