General question(s)...
« on: 8 Dec 2012, 05:40 pm »
Hi all!

How would you describe the overall sound of the Bryston products?  I'm considering purchasing an integrated.

I don't care for a super-flat, thin, sterile type of sound.  I like a clean, clear, warm, full, gutsy type of sound.  I hope those descriptions help you out.

Do you think Bryston products will work for me?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

I had the B60 and it was the best commercial integrated amp I have ever heard, very well made. if I had to buy a commercial integrated amp, I would buy it again! :thumb:

This type of question will never help you..... this is a bryston forum you have to audition this stuff yourself to know if it meets your criteria based above.

I will answer without seeming a Bryston fan.
The Bryston is NOT a warm amplifier at all.
The Bryston is going to be neutral. and really pass through what you put in. It is also very clear, no fuzzy additions. Though a power conditioner would enhance that some.
I am still impressed how nice my Bryston amp, preamp, and phono box sound. And admit I have worked on various free tweaks to get the last possible bit out of my Bryston stuff. Mostly concerning power conditioning and cords etc.
So if you BUY a warm preamp, say a Conrad Johnson, then your sound will be like that preamp. Since it has a pretty clear know warm sound.
I myself bought a VAC Standard four tube preamp to use as a fancy tube buffer for the digital stuff.
(I kept my old cheaper digital gear when i bought the Bryston and the  tubes 'fixed' my digital 'problem' perfectly.)

So if you actually want warm sound, then with the Bryston, you can buy some preamp with that coloration, and know the Bryston amp will not add any further changes to the sound.

I have No special loyalty to Bryston, and if something bad was afoot, i would 'diss Bryston in a heartbeat. (aka my Bryston DAC experience) so I have no qualms saying i am giving an honest answer to the op.
This may be a little rude to Bryston fan types, and all. but the guy is gonna get an honest answer from me.

I think that's as honest and accurate an appraisal as you're gonna get, diofan56. Especially of the latest ( SST2 ) generation. I have  7BSST2 mono's here and I couldn't have done a better job of explaining how they sound. Not warm, not cool, they just are...that -as I understand the Bryston school of thought- was the plan. Neutrality uber alles. Whatever is sent their way is passed on down the line unaltered and that sound doesn't blow everybody's hair back but there's something to be said for telling it like it is. Brystons do that.

I auditioned many amplifiers and at the end of the day, brought home a pair of 28's - I enjoy them very much, but music is such a personal taste. Quite simply, my audio Nirvana could easily be someone else's Hell. Best advice is to go out and audition the Bryston amplifier you may be interested in and let your ears decide for yourself - don't forget to have fun in the process :thumb:

I would also add, since you are inquiring specifically about the integrated amps, the B60 sounds a little warmer than the B100 in what could be described as a fuller more organic presentation.  In addition, the presentation of the sound field is slightly more forward on the B60 when compared to the B100.

The B100 on the other hand is more neutral and provides greater low level detail as well as greater dynamic capability.  Moreover, the B100 has better connection capability and remote functionality if that is important to you.

I currently own both, along with many other Bryston products, and even though these are not in an active system, I have enjoyed both - particularly the B60 for it's elegant simplicity and good sound.  I have not had the opportunity to audition the new B135 and it may very well be the best of both.
