I need a new all in one printer
« on: 1 Dec 2012, 03:28 pm »
My HP printer just upped and died without any warning, so it's time for a new all in one printer. HP, Brother, Canon etc. all seem to get very mixed reviews Epson doesn't seem quite as bad but people whine about the cost of ink.

Trying to keep it under $100.

Thoughts?

I have owned and used several printers over the years. I like the Canon brand. It has the best quality for prints. Also it seems to be more reliable and user friendly. I have two and the one that I am using now is the PIXMA MP600. I used Lexmark and HP, both really junky. I like the Canon photo paper too, for high quality prints.

If you look at user review online before you buy, you can avoid getting an all-in-one printer that does not work well.

My two cents..

Do you need an all in one? I won't buy one again - cheap/ink replacement pricey. I will stick with my reliable laserjet.

I had a cheap free HP printer that came with a PC purchase. I replaced it with a HP all in one printer/scanner. The new printer is a POS. I bought a Cannon scanner before this printer and it died a couple months after getting it. I am wondering if it is me or if the quality and reliability have taken a nose dive?

Yes, the ink costs more than the printer itself.

If you don't print colours so often, why not switch to monochrome laser printer which prints much better than inkjet & print more papers. But a laser printer always costs a bit more than an injet.

Last month I replaced my old laser printer (still working fine) to a Brother all-in-one WIRELESS networking laser printer.
I have chosen Brother because:-

(1) small footprint so that I don't need to relocate it.
(2) all-in-one;
(3) wireless Networking - no more hardwiring & allow more than one PC to use it.
(4) cheaper to buy & the laser toner cartridge is cheaper than other brandnames.

I am happy with it.

+1 for Brother laser Multi function.

I have used them for 8 years with no problems.

Toner lasts for years before needing replacement. Inkjet color is too expensive for my use.

+2 for the Brother all-in-one. They are inexpensive, reliable, and bulletproof.

When my last AIO died, I decided to get two printers.
I bought a brother wireless laser for b&w, and a HP wireless all in one for color stuff and scanning.

You spend more up front, but I think long term it's cheaper, especially if you can find the brother on sale.  They both do duplex printing which is really nice, and once you get used to having the speed of a laser at home it would be hard to give it up.

When I was looking, I gave the most emphasis to ink costs, was willing to spend more up front for cheaper ink down the road because you end up spending more on ink then the printer.  Consumer reports gives you the cost per page for ink.

The one thing about the brother is the first cartridge is not that big, so it doesn't last as long as a normal one.  I made the mistake of trying to use a cheap ebay replacement, it was leaving blotches all over the printouts.  Bought a real Brother cartridge and the output looks great.

I decided to go with a Brother All in One which I got for $50. I don't do that much printing so hopefully I won't get bled dry on ink costs.

I'm through with all in ones. . Monochrome laser printer are the way to go.

The cost of ink waaaay exceeds the cost of the printer. So, spend a little more up front
and realize the savings for years to come.

One last question on this topic for those with a brother printer

What is the executable for the Brother MFL-Pro Suite called. CCleaner et al says it is installed on my machine but I can't find it. I have searched for it, manually looked in the Brother folder etc. but can't find it.

I don't like my Epson Workcenter (bought 3 years ago) at all.  It's louder than my prior HP's, it doesn't collate backwards and the wireless function was much harder to set up (thru the router) than the dedicated wireless function of the HP all-in-one's I had previously.  Ink is costlier I feel, too.

I bought the Epson mostly because I found HP's laptop quality had gotten so abysmal I wasn't sure if the printers had taken a turn for the worse.

Lesson learned - nothing is forever.  I bought an HP DV6 laptop last year and it's fine....so I'll probably go back to HP printer/all-in-one next time out.

I had a Brother fax for 20 years that was great so I'm warm to that brand, too.

For what it's worth, these are the top 6 inkjet all-in-one models according to Consumer Reports.  Tho, the first 31 models of 58 models are within 5 points of one another to #1 - according to Consumer Reports that makes then statistically insignificant to one another in terms of 'better'

1. Canon Pixma MG8220 (72 points)
2. Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000 (72 points)
3. Canon Pixma MG6120 (72 points)
4. Lexmark Pro 915 (72 points)
5. HP Photosmart 7510 (71 points)
6. HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus (71 points)

The report doesn't exactly point to any one brand being superior....among the lowest 10 (57 to 64 points) were models from Epson, Brother, HP, Kodak, HP and Canon)

It's not about price, either as there are top rated ones for $140 and bottom rated ones for $200+.

I think you picks your poison and simply live with it here.

I'd probably go HP again.....I've had success with them, their cartridges are the most widely available and you can get them in biggie packs at Costco reducing your costs a lot.

I refuse to use inkjet, due to the highway robbery on cartidges.

I got a Dell personal laser all-in-one (momochrome), since it was a good deal at the time, maybe I had a coupon. With 2000-4000 pages in the laser cartridge, I may never buy another one! I print only a little, sometimes I make a copy. And it comes with Ethernet as well as USB!
