Oppo DVD/BluRay video quality better than a Sony PS3?

I currently use a Sony PS3 in my HT set up to view BluRays and DVDs.  Its about 3~4 years old now, but starting to suffer from occasional video drop outs.  I've been nothing but happy with the PS3's performance to date.

I am considering upgrading my old PS3 with a Oppo player.  Since its sole purpose is for video viewing, I was considering picking up a used Oppo BDP-93 or the new/current 103 model for $499.  I have no interest in 3D.  I also have a mac mini set up that I can use as well when needed.

From my limited research, the BDP-103 incorporates Marvell's Kyoto-G2H video processor with the latest generation Qdeo™ technology

Can someone with real world experience comment on if the Oppo video display quality would be significantly better than a PS3?

Thanks

I have the Oppo BDP-95 and the first gen PS3, the only video differences I notice is with DVDs which the Oppo gets the aspect ratio correct every time where the PS3 doesn't.  With a Blu-rays comparison, I haven't really noticed a difference with the quality of the video.   The PS3 is faster to operate than the BDP-95, but the Oppo has more options to customize the video and audio.  The main reason I picked up the Oppo BDP-95 was for the audio and tired of listing to the PS3 fan noise roar during movies.   I believe the 95 has a different video processor for one of the HDMI when compared to the 93/103, and it might also depend on the options your TV supports if there will be a difference.

I have both a PS3 and Oppo BDP-93. To me there is no discernable difference in video or sound quality. Perhaps side-by-side it would be possible to notice some small differences, or if my associated equipment was better. I have a 60-inch Sharp Aquos LCD TV and run through a Denon 4311 AVR. I don't do 3D, but that may make some difference to you.

I tend to use the Oppo for Blu-Ray and DVD because is makes less noise and is a bit faster to navigate and turn on and off. For streaming Netflix the PS3 interface is much better.

I gave a BDP-93 and PS3 and have noticed a huge difference.  I have a 720p Sony LCD projector in the secondary basement system and had the PS3 down there for years.  The projector is certainly not state of the art and I always assumed the inability to get things right with the Spears and Munsil disc or my colorimeter was due to the projector.  About a year and a half back I decided to shift things around.  I swapped the BDP-93 in the secondary bedroom system with the PS3 in the secondary basement system.  The bedroom system has a 55 inch 1080p Vizio LED.  I had the BDP-93 in the bedroom system in case I wanted to play SACD or DVD-A as the bedroom system does feed 4 remote locations.  I had an Integra universal DVD player (never looked at the video) and decided to move that in the bedroom for SACD and DVD-A and leave the PS3 for Blu-Ray/DVD duties.  I did notice a small difference, more so with DVDs in the PS3 vs. the BDP-93 in the bedroom system but I probably watch a dozen movies or so a year in that system.  I was not using the basement system much except for weekend football games.  The video quality was never that good with the PS3.  I had set up the BDP-93 quickly  in the basement and noticed it seemed to be much better with the test disc but I just had time to sample a small part of a DVD.  About a week later I went to dinner with a friend and it was too late to make the movie we intended to see and he indicated he would like to see Avatar.  I had watched it the previous week with the PS3 so I was curious.  A night and day difference.  He did not believe the projector was just 720p.  I now use the basement system more than the main system (and I have a nicer projector in the may system) as it is more convenient with the receiver vs. separate amps and I have 8.1 sound down there.  I've used the basement for watching movies at least twice as much as the main system in the past year and a half and much more than I used the basement to do that in the prior 4 years.  Not a fan of the PS3 as a Blu-Ray/DVD source.  I'm fine with it in the bedroom system and eventually when I move it will go to some secondary system.

Good feedback, thanks guys.

I suspect I will look for an OPPO for the primary video drive and keep the PS3 for games.

Are you running the HDMI out from the Oppo and the PS3 through the Denon?
