The New Radiohead
« on: 25 Nov 2012, 05:54 pm »
I stumbled upon this band while reading up on the Brit awards and one of my favorite artist to come out in the past few years, Ben Howard.
The name of this band is called      Alt J       The album is called   An Awesome Wave     (5 years in development)
This band hit me like a ton of bricks, and it has been in non stop rotation for a few weeks. I think if you like Radiohead ,you will love this band as well.
They are fantastc!!!!!! :thumb: :D
They are different sounding, with the lead singers voice being strange, but oh so interesting. The songs are complex, sycopated, weird, Radioheadish.
This band really does it all for me.
Here are a few tracks to get a taste of this dynamic band.

Enjoy!! Let me know what you think...

Thanks Josh. This band is wild and very inovative. You can find the full album is on Spotify, and lots of other cool stuff on YouTube including Street performances and a whole concert.

I have been getting in a rut with music, so I'm eagerly seeking out good new stuff.  This thread is a good one in the right direction.

MOG is one of the various ones that doesn't work in Canada.   Grooveshark is our only go-to.

Interesting for sure! There is an anxiousness to it. Likely due to those dichotomous timing changes. Weird and energizing.

Great find! I heard them at a restaurant in Chicago a few months ago and asked who they were, thank you for the reminder. The vocals are Mumford & Sons-like but the music is much better IMO. Interesting in particular is that the drummer does not use hi-hat or cymbals. Watching the KEXP show now while ordering the import LP. Solid band! I will keep an eye out for upcoming Chicago appearances.

Hoosierdaddy,

If you see that they are playing in Chicago, give me a heads up. And I will do likewise.

...Interesting in particular is that the drummer does not use hi-hat or cymbals.

It's a Peter Gabriel thing. He recorded his third album with no cymbals to achieve a different sound from everybody else. The drum sound from that album was heard all over the place afterwards ( usually with cymbals ). Check out Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight to get a big earful of that drum sound. Phil Collins drummed on Peter Gabriel's third album.
And the Circle of Life is complete...

And PG's second through fifth albums...        ...in Genesis, of course!
