I built these Power Cables
« on: 20 Nov 2012, 09:54 pm »

I built these power cords http://www.audiotweaks.com/diy/bobcrump_pc/page01.htm several years ago
and the only thing I don't like about them is the Schurter IEC 4300.0603 connectors which cost $11.50 each
on todays market. These connectors are just to loose on my equipment.

For $10.00 to 20.00 each, what is a better fitting IEC plug that is currently available on today's market?

Thanks so much,
Steve

The tolerances on IEC 320 connectors are quite wide. The typical solution is to wrap some white teflon tape around the plug so it fits the inlet more snugly. Alternatively, you can get an IEC320 over-mold insert, which is less kludgy. I use the tape fix, and haven't tried these purpose built over molds......

But there has got to be a better IEC plug.

The Schurter 4300.0603 is just to loose.

Their has to be something better.

Can I bend the connectors ?

Paul's comment was that it's the fit of the plastic body that is probably the issue. I'm just wondering if you understood that?

Maybe it is the machinist in me that makes the +.015 /- .015 so easy to hit.

Steve.

I would think a manufacturer of AC components would easily be able to hit a +.015 or minus .015 tolerance.
The shop that I worked at would hit a +.001/-.001 on a daily basis.
USA Machinist, Rock.
What is the Problem ?

Um, apparently the tolerances in the specification aren't very tight. For cost/manufacturing reasons, I guess. Most people don't seem to have an issue with it, what equipment do you have? Maybe you could replace the IECs with PowerCons or something like that.

I haven't had an opportunity to try a Marinco IEC plug. I can't help but wondering if they fit tighter then
the Schurter's IEC's that sell for $11.50 USD by many electronics firms.

I have used Marinco IECs they are slightly tighter body.
But still not snug. Most plugs are NOT a snug fit.
I also wrap plumber's teflon tape around the flat of the plug to make it a snug fit on IEC.

IMO, if you want tight, you will have to increase your budget to the $30 - $40 range.  Marinco and entry level Wattages are not that much of an improvement over the Schurters.  I suggest you try the Furutech FI-15 or NeoTech NCP-301 IEC ends.

Yeah, I was just going to tell Elizabeth that I use going to try the Teflon tape until I saw
your post. You may be right about furutech or Neotech being much better.
But I think I am going to go with Elizabeth's suggestions right now.

Thanks, E

I've never used the Shurters but I had the same problem with the entry level Wattgates. My solution was the same as some others have posted. Teflon tape. I found it to work just fine for me.

The Furutech plugs fit very snugly.  You can just about pick up your equipment by the power cord!  (Not recommended.)  And they sound very good, too.  Worth every penny.

Peace,

Parts Express is 45 minutes from me. I think I'm going to go up there and test all of the IEC connectors they have
in stock in the $20.00 range and see which one is of better quality and fit.
