Tape output as second main out
« on: 18 Nov 2012, 10:39 pm »

I'm in need of a second pair of main outputs on my preamp for my bi-amp system.
I'm wondering if I can use the tape outputs as a second main out on my preamp.
If it will work, will using the tape outputs adjust the volume just like the main outs do?

Thanks,
Steve

No, the tape outputs are before the EQ and before the volume control.

Can I split the main outputs of my preamp by using a "Y" connector so I will have two sets of main outs
or will that degrade the overall performance of the preamp.

It depends on your pre-amp's design. You could try it and see how it sounds.

I think I’m going to go ahead and split the main outputs and try it.
The plan is to split the main outputs of my preamp using a “Y” connector and then use one
set of main outputs to the inputs of an active crossover which will feed a bass amp only.
The second set of preamp outputs will go directly to the main amp inputs, bypassing the active crossover altogether. The main speakers have their own passive crossovers and are good
to approx 40hz. It’s got to be better than sending the whole signal to the active crossover and
then the crossover splitting the signal to the separate amps.

I can't find the link but one of the parts places has a small RCA that has one male end and a T with 2 female connections that allows 2 RCA's from one output

May be better than a Y

Hi.

(1) Can I split the main outputs of my preamp by using a "Y" connector so I will have two sets of main outs

(2) or will that degrade the overall performance of the preamp.

(1) Yes.

(2) It depends the I/P impedance of yr bi-amp system, hopefully no too low & the O/P impedance of yr preamp, hopefully not too high AND the run of the bi-amp signal interconnect to yr preamp, hopefully not too long.

Try it & listen if any drop of overall volume & any drop of HF.

Likewise for my active sub hooked up direct to the O/P of my passive stereo linestage. The added capacitance of the subwoofer interconnects, low I/P Z of my subwoofer (using built-in SS power module). I heard audible volume drop due to the loading of the sub.

So I am now design-building a simple active impedance buffer so as to eliminate the O/P voltage drop due to impedenace unmatch.

Yr situation is very similar to mine.

Good luck.

They can put a little more leverage and strain on the RCA jack, so it depends on how sturdy your jacks are.  Amps with sturdy chassis mount RCAs retained by a hex nut are always good to go, while some others may only be lightly retained and you can hear the PCB board and jacks flex and creak.

Bang. That is what I need. I only wish they where not rotated 90 degree from the output RCA's.

Used a pair to a four channel amp for years. Don't expect more
db by biamping. I did it to utilize peak power and doubled up
on sc to speakers. You pay shipping and I'll send em to ya.
Can't remember if they are audioquest or cardas.
