BDP-1 skips after track transition
« on: 15 Nov 2012, 11:44 pm »
Hi, as of late, my BDP-1 is experiencing random skips. On these the player finishes a track (track 1), then plays a few seconds of the next (let's call it track 2)and suddenly skips and gets back to a few seconds before track 1 ends. If I replay track 1 everything is normal and the track finishes and track 2 is played correctly. It happens with a variety of albums (all my music is ripped to FLAC) and always randomly but often enough to be very annoying. My BDP-1 has firmware S1.48 2012-07-25. These skips surely did not happen when I acquired the player and may be happening from the last couple firmware revisions but am not completely sure.

Hi Gustavog,

Have you tried playing songs from the included Bryston USB drive?

Cheers,
Chris

Hello Chris,

In the beginning I used to play from the Bryston drive but have not done that in a long while. My music has been either ripped to FLAC using dBpowerAmp or bought online as FLAC from hdtracks.com, bleep.com, etc. The drive I use is a WD Passport, 1TB, connected to the back of the BDP-1.

Thanks

Gustavo

I haven't used DBpoweramp for a few years. But I used to get random skips on cd-r when converting tracks. Maybe its improved since then I don't know, but I switched to another converter and never had the random skips.

Since then I just use wave files since memory is relatively cheap compared to years past. :smoke:

The skips happens both with dBpowerAmp ripped tracks and from other sources. Also, I could swear that this did not happen before and that it is a recent development.

Not sure if there is a relation but my 1TB WD Passport HD has 730GB or music now. I stated with about 650 GB of music

Hi

If possible it might be worth transferring the music to another drive to test.

What James said...

The third sentence in your original post eliminates the files as the source of the problem - if they play correctly sometimes, but not other times, then your rips are good. It's either a buffering problem in the BPD or the problem is with the disk. I'd suspect the disk drive first, so it makes sense to move your files to another drive. Being 75% full isn't the issue either. For the record, I have a couple of 1TB USB drives and one of them only has about 100MB of free space - never had the first hiccup. I suspect you've done what I've done - just ripped disk after disk to the thing (it's not like it's going to get fragmented with this kind of usage).

A 1TB USB 3.0 drive is under $100 - amazing how cheap storage is these days. When I first started servicing this stuff, a 96MB drive was $60,000!

Thanks Kevin and all . I will try with another HDD and see how it goes. Makes sense if nobody else is having problems and people are very finicky with quality here

I have experienced the same problem you describe.   When transitioning between tracks the player will occasionally jump backwards into the middle of the track that has just finished playing.   The behavior is rare and nearly random, although it appears to be more likely to happen on longer length tracks.  One theory is that the hard drive spinning down (which is more likely on longer tracks) is playing a role in the problem.

I used to experience this problem about once a day with my BDP-1's originally installed firmware.  But the problem seems to have vanished about the time I upgraded to S1.40 2012-05-10 which I am still running today.

I only experience this once in a while (perhaps once after a couple of days). I am running the latest software build. Will try with a new HDD and see if it stills happens. I had an Olive player and things like this would happen everytime, so it was a relief when I got the BDP-1.

Hi gustavog,

Have you tried playing the content from the USB drive that was included with your BDP, this will help determine what is causing the issue.

I haven't had problems with the USB flash drive but then again I rarely play it.

I just moved my music to a brand new 2TB WD Passport and I have experienced a couple of skips/dropouts after a long time with the player in Pause and just after pressing Play again on the BR2 remote.

Check. Have had that on all hdd's. seems logical that the Bdp1 has to refill the buffer again after that long period of pause, Chris might confirm this?

Doesn't it disappear after a few seconds? It does in my situation.

Cheers, Marius

Things I look for when there is a skip:
1) If it's a skip, is the file size correct on the HDD?    I have found two corrupt files in the last year on my main computer that were transferred to the BDP as an empty file.   (This is where ZFS or BRTFS file systems might help...)
2) Was the rip correct?   Re-rip to see if that corrects it.
3) Was the copy correct?  Try to use something like synkron for macs or synctoy from microsoft for windows which will validate the copy was correct.   Least likely of the scenarios, but windows and linux will do funny things  when copying to a network share if the drive is full and you might not even see a complaint.

I forgot to add that if I skip to the beginning of the same track, it plays correctly (no skip/dropout). As I said, it has happenned a couple of times and it looks as if the player is doing something else suddenly and cannot keep up with the track, or else is not buffering enough, or the HDD is too slow suddenly (this is the second WD Passport HDD I use). Just me speculating but certainly the rips are fine (FLAC 24/96).

What kinds of problems with the USB drive?
Was it the only drive plugged In at the same time?
How many songs comprise your music library?
Are the hard drive USB powered or do they have there own power supply?
What file system are the hard drives making use of?

Cheers,
Chris

I only have the 2TB HDD plugged in.
I am not sure how many songs but there are 750GB worth of albums, in cd and HD (24 bits and up to 192khz)
The HDD is a WD Passport (USB powered)
The file system is NTFS. The previous HDD that I was using was FAT32. BTW, I understand that the scratch pad feature is only available in FAT32. What sort of benefits does it bring?

Thanks

Hello,

When you where using the USB thumb drive, was it the only drive plugged in?
If you navigate to the bdp's home page it will list the number of songs in the database.
Scratch drive allows for an album view in Max 2 and Mini 2 in the most recent firmware release.
The NTFS file system is more resource intensive then fat32, switching the new driv back to at32 may help alleviate the issue.

Cheers,
Chris

When you say after a long time with the player on pause, do you mean long enough for the drive to stop spinning? On my little Toshiba Canvio drives, there's a light which will go out when that happens. I've never paused that long, but I wouldn't be surprised if that caused a problem.
