What was your first Subwoofer?

Mine were a pair of Canton's. They were in sealed metal cabinets, had a 12" speaker and were passive non-amplified. They were decent and did produce some serious bass for the time, 1991. Boy, things sure have changed since then!

Infinity Modulus. It worked pretty well for it's time.

Vandersteen, the one with 3x8" drivers. Sold it, couldn't make it work right. Oh for measuring gear back then!!

Polk cheapie 10" for home theater. It was "muddy" but it did the job for LFE. Not for music reproduction, that's for sure.

Sometimes we can be happy with 60hz+ for music but need that extra 20 hz down for movies :>

2 - 12" CTS foam surround woofers, fs 19Hz, mounted in the floor of my parents' living room, under the couch, backs to the basement down below. 6dB low pass done with two fistfuls of enameled wire wrapped around another fistful of 3 1/2" finishing nails for a poor man's permeable core.

A DIY Jbl 15" from a design in Audio mag. Never quite jelled with the Spica Angelus that were then my main speakers (still have them, though retired).

I just guessed - played it by ear! I did have a friend come by who said it was the best sounding system he had ever heard outside of the Dayton Wright factory where he worked, though!
This was early days, though, when most subs were appallingly bad!

Good sound, but I prefer my V1, easier to integrate to my listening room.

Appallingly bad was the BSR sub that I had, yuk! But they were good enough to spawn into what we have today.

Velodyne ULD-15 with 400 watt RMS outboard amp, servo controlled. Bought it in the mid-80s and enjoyed many years of great bass from it.

Altec Lansing... 601 I wanna say it was.. multimedia sub. Cream colored ported 8". Looking back, loud, extremely crude. But I had fun in my MM speaker days. I owned several sets of Altec Lansing gear before stepping up to this system. The last system I had was AL MX-5021, a pair of them, so I ran a pair of the subs and one set of satellites. Super loud, punchy, fair quality bass within a very narrow bandwidth.

I still have these speakers, I have the whole setup. My hifi is nearly, nearly complete and mean to do a shootout between them, for fun.

I saw a M&K sub at a local GW a few years back....I went home and thought about it, suffice it to say, it was long gone when I drove back to get it!

A pair of Celestion S20 with 8" woofer, 100W A/B amp and slot reflex port. I still use them for HT. I would put them up against the JL Audio Gotham G213 any day.

The legendary Dayton Audio SUB-1000 for $99 from Parts Express.

The lumpy, flubby bass the Dayton produced convinced me to sell it to a friend with small Polk speakers, it works great for movies and they are happy.

I now use a Pinnacle sub bought for $35 at a thrift store, but only for movies and dialed in to play only the lowest rumbles.

M&K VX-4 purchased new way back in early 1985. 12" woofer and 75 watts.

It's still in use in a secondary system. M&K was my first exposure to subwoofers in the local hifi shop and I was thoroughly impressed.

Definitely isn't comparable to today's offerings, but still does well for its age.

Cool! That was the second sub that I owned. The thing that I remember best about it was that it looked like a nice walnut end table. That's what everyone thought it was anyway.

The first sub I ever owned was made by a company called Dynamic Acoustics. It was a small cube shaped cabinet on casters, with two bottom firing 8" polypropylene woofers. it was ported and had big L,R level controls. It was a passive sub and it actually mated better with my minispeakers than the Velodyne. I was Hell bent on specs back in the 80's so I convinced myself that the Velodyne sounded better.
