Has the Modwright Transporter been overtaken?
« on: 10 Nov 2012, 11:32 pm »
I have a Modright Transporter Platinum. It plays the best digital I've ever heard.  However in the couple of years since I bought it computer based audio using software like jriver together asynchronous USB DACs have really taken off and I can't help but wonder if such systems are now capable of even better performance than my Modright.  I've never heard such a system but I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience of both a Modright T and this kind of system.  ( let's just leave 24/192 files out of this please).

Sold my Modwright Transporter years ago when it was handily bested in my system by the Bryston BDP-1/Bryston BDA-1 combo.

While Modwright TP was an excellent unit, the digital world moves very rapidly and it is next to impossible to stay at the top for long periods of time.

If you can audition some newer transports and/or DACS, you can judge for yourself.

I agree with George, digital is moving fast and getting cheaper.  Try too demo some units at various price points.  I think it will put a smile on your face.

+1

i also owned the Platinum Modwright Transporter and feel it is bested by my mac mini server running itunes and pure music with the metrum octave dac and audiophilleo USB to SPDIF converter....no contest really.  For me, trading the Logitech interface for Pure Music was another big move up both in terms of sound and convenience/ease of use.

Agree the MWTP was great at the time but things do move fast with respect to digital playback.

It's going to be a limited edition which designer John Westlake is going to design as a  present to himself.
