Which Hifi-rack do you use?
« on: 10 Nov 2012, 06:43 pm »
HI All,

Question is obvious, I think it would be nice to have fellow Brystonians share their experience on the subject of storing our favorite Audio-gear. With the arrival of the BHA1 my IKEA-cabinet won't suffice anymore, and I'm on the lookout for something nice to accompany my Bryston rig. Personally I love a cabinet/rack on wheels, I am an avid experimenter on cabling and such ...

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Cheers!
Marius

btw, if you have any thoughts about storing a Headphone that would be great too   :thumb:

Hi Marius,

I have owned several racks in the last 10 years or more but these are by far the best i have come across.
HIFI Racks ltd in the uk, they export all over the world.
If you want to add or take out components you just order a new set of legs... simples!
Im sure they could custom fit a set of castors for you.  :)

Paul.

I've seen many Bryston owners go the way of Solid Tech Rack Silence

Hifi racks for me as well, it wasnt cheap getting them shipped to Australia, but well worth it.  I would post a picture but as I'm waiting for my SP3, my current kit isnt Bryston enough at the moment for this forum  but it will be soon  :green:

About 10? 12? years ago i was in the market for a rack..
I saw some nice looking (cheap) all metal with glass shelves at a local big box store.
I bought two of the low wide ones, and one tall one.
I filled all the tubular members with dried sand and sealed them.
I have my Plasma on one with the video stuff under.
My two TTs on the other low one, and all my stereo gear (except amp) on the tall one.
Never seen the design again!.
I like them and am satisfied with them totally.
I like the central back screen pillar, as i can zip tie A/C cords to it, and allow interconnects to be away from the A/C.
I paid like $150 or so each, plus the hassle of the sand filling.
Being cheap i am happy happy.
My long ones are only 40" the pic is 50" and the tall one is just partially visible in the (only) online pic i could locate. The long ones I have added  a vertical center support for the middle shelf to carry heavy stuff.

For a headphone rack/stand I've always wanted to do the following...

Get some sort of mannequin head, doesn't matter what it looks like so long as its the right shape.

Buy a Lucha Libre wrestling mask and put it on the head.

Place headphones on the masked head.

I have Etymotic IEMs, so it wouldn't exactly work out for me.  I've been very tempted to buy cans just to justify the mask though.

Or maybe put an old-school hockey goalie mask like Jason from the Friday the 13th movies on the head.

Audiophiles overspend on racks perhaps worse than anything else IMO.

For sonics there are two questions:

Hard or Soft - Spikes/rigid design for concrete or other really stiff floors/walls (don't forget about wall mounts).  Soft supports for wooden or other bouncy floors/walls.

Really loud, turntables, or open tubes - If any of this applies consider an enclosure for air borne transmission of microphonics.

In 40 years I've never heard one material versus another make any difference.  Like adjustable designs.  Like my Ikea nightstands (small but just wide enough for 17 inch components, 1.2 inch thick top/bottom/sides for monoblocks/CDP, wheels, adjustable shelves for pre/DEQ, looks good enough for the mancave listening room, wheels, cheap).  Unfortunately that particular piece is no longer available (at least in the U.S.).  For my living room/casual listening system I use a Techline 36 inch wide, 18 inch deep, 30 inch tall three full extension drawer cabinet with matching thicker top all in flat black (don't believe the company exists anymore).  It can hold 750 CD's with labels pointing up and my receiver/CDP on top.

Kitchen worktop and threaded bar; note the subtle unfinished look leaving a gap asking to be filled
with a 10B Sub plus a 4BSST2 on each side.
Domestic approval has been obtained but i haven't earned the cash yet!

Winter project is to tidy this up but i might spend the time auditioning more new music instead.

Another nod to HiFi Racks, like Richo I have tried several racks over the years but for me HiFi racks takes some real beating + Bryston kit looks great in it :)

I'm also looking at a company called Blok furniture, they do a range of racks that are a little more wife friendly shall we say

Yes, Solid HARDwood stands are the sonic way to go. My favourite.

So I custom built one for my rig by modifying a 3-piece Cherry wood tea table set. Dirt cheapie (picked up from Walmart years back) yet effective.

Surely I don't want to spend a few grands for a brandname solid hardwood audio stand! :duh:

Hey Cheap Jack,we did have an earthquake a week or so ago in Portland Maine.Nothing fell.I was out having a gusto at the time, and it felt like a train was going by,it made noise too.Tim92gts,I wouldn't recommend taking a nap on your sofa with Rush 20130 playing or  you might have to see an audioligist.....whatcha say?.....Mark K

Hi Mark,
that sofa isn't a listening position for any sane human, more there to absorb some sound to balance the glass
on the opposite wall.
Usually listen or watch a sensible 6 metres or so away, blue sofa in this one

For audio racks, I fall on the more modest side of the scale.  I have a couple of Lovan Affiniti Pro5 pieces holding my equipment.  The piece in the center is a budget item from a "big box" store, as I don't fret much over what holds my television set.  I'm more strictly a sound person, with video taking a distant back seat.
