Laundrew,  that's what my father-in-law replaced with the Yamaha Integrated amp and ESS speakers in the early 80's.  I think his was an early 60's Magnavox or Quasar stereo "cabinet".  It did look like furniture.  It was similar to this:

In the early 80's, getting replacement tubes got difficult.

Hi HsvHeelFan and all Audio Circle members.

When I was too young to afford any sound system,
I went to my friend's house to listen to a stereo furniture
(I used to call it like that).
His father's stereo was a Clairtone.
Sorry no picture, but look very similar to yours.

Hi all Audio Circle members.

Do I remember my first amplifier ?

How can I forget an amplifier that I have designed and built myself.

Yes, that piece of junk (On the fuzzy picture) did work
and play music, in MONO, of course.

If I remember right, the tube were 5Y3 rectifier, 6SN7 triode
and 6F6 penthode.

Ii gave, believe me or not a 5 watts of super distortionned watts.

But,. I was fun to build.

I got all the parts from TVs that friends and relatives gave me.

That was in 1968.

Comments (Good or bad and constructive or destructive) are welcome,
I won't get upset, I promiss.

My first was a Pioneer SX-1010 receiver:

Next up was an Luxman LV105 integrated:

I was using them to drive Dahlquist DQ-10's.

After those, things got fuzzy!

SAE A501. A beast but shrill sounding, in retrospect.

Wow what a moster :green:

Mine didn't go as far back as some of yours.  It was an NAD 3240PE integrated amp.

I remember it well and I'm surprised that I was able to find a (terrible) picture of it. Being just a kid, I loved the fact that it didn't have a labeled power switch - had to pull the treble knob. We all had to start somewhere  - yard sale acquisition, bought with money earned cutting lawns.

This has been a very interesting thread.

All of us started early, with frankly, some really poor audio equipment and yet, each of us, in search of better audio, have all ended up with Bryston.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that started his audio journey from humble beginnings.

I just wanted to thank James Tanner and the Bryston team for creating outstanding products that we all get a lot of enjoyment out of.

Best as I can recall I had a mono Grommes integrated amp that my father received as a gift in 1957.  Can't remember what my first stereo amp was, but I had an HK black-faced/gold knob receiver that threw a FIT when I tried to crank up four Dynaco A-25s at the same time.   :nono:

My first system (mono of course) was  a Heathkit 7 or 12 watt tube integrated amp, a Electrovoice 8" speaker in their Baronet small folded horn speaker enclosure (both units that I built from kits and plans in the 7th grade), along with a Garrard turntable and Grado moving coil cartridge.  I ran this combo for nearly 10 years and finally replaced it with a pair of Dynaco MK1V mono tube amps (same as a ST-70 but on two chassis with a separate power supply per channel,) a Dyna PAS-3 preamp and FM-3 tube tuner all built by myself.  Two KLH6 speakers and a Dual 1009 turntable and Grado cartridge finished up that system.  About then I went into business with Paul Jensen and have built thousands of audio components since then, most of our own designs.  I am still doing this right now, built eight Fet Valve 400R and 600R amps in the past two weeks (and bench checked a couple dozen more) trying to take care of the tons of customer orders from our recent sale.

Its still fun seeing something you made from scratch work great the first time it is connected to electricity!

Dynaco SCA-80. I still have it but it has early van Alstine MosFet circuits in it (it actually says Jensens Stereo Shop on the faceplate). I need to send it in someday for recapping (it hums). Looks like this:

Around 1970, the SCA-80 and a pair of A-25s was the go-to smart system of choice.  That SCA-80 looks like it was just born from the factory box.

A small receiver called Selfix that I worked many weeks in a hot laundry to get enough coin for.  {1967.} :violin:

I bagged the pic from the interweb, this one is not mine. Mine looks pretty clean except the plating on the bottom plate has discoloration.

My ex brother in law still has my A25's and they still work.
