HDMI hookup help needed.
« on: 3 Nov 2012, 02:21 pm »
Hi Guys,

I have a Sony flat screen TV in my family room and the sound is really muffled. The speakers are tiny and positioned behind the screen.  I have a Sony HT in a box that sounds okay but I'm having trouble hooking it up to the cable box.

My cable box has one HDMI slot and I use it to hook up the box to the TV.  The HT receiver has a single HDMI and It works for viewing DVD's but I don't know how to hook the cable box up to the HT because It only has one HDMI.  I bought an HDMI splitter but I'm not sure where to book it up.  Should I put it on the Cable box and run an HDMI from cable box to the HT?  That would mean no HDMI connection between the HT and the TV.  I'm confused and appreciate your advice.

Thanks

Jack

You need a HDMI switch box, not a splitter, available from Best Buy or Source.
Such HDMI switch box can provide up to 3 HDMI I/P & one HDMI O/P.

Simply hook up yr HD cable box & yr DVD player to the I/P of the HDMI switch box & hook up the O/P of tlhe switch box to yr HT recevier I/P. Done like dinner!!

If the HT receiver doesn't decode Blu-ray sound formats (Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio) or you're not using a Blu-ray player, then an HDMI connection to the receiver for sound is not necessarily required and the HT receiver could be connected via an optical or coaxial digital audio cable.

Most HD TVs have multiple HDMI inputs and either an optical or coaxial digital output.  You can connect the cable box, DVD player and any other HDMI source to the TV, and then the TV would be used to switch inputs.  The digital audio output of the TV would connect to the HT receivers digital audio input, which most should have.

But the poster clearly stated there is only ONE single HDMI I/P in his receiver which must be an older model.
HDMI sounds much better than optical digital cable I/P, my friend.

Yes, but I was clearly referring to multiple HDMI inputs on the TV, not the receiver

That's not always true, and in some cases I've found HDMI audio to not sound as good as a separate digital audio connection, not to mention we're talking about a (presumably) inexpensive HT-in-a-box solution to provide better sound than the internal TV speakers.

Thanks Guys!

I found an old optical cable and it worked.  I am not overly concerned with sound quality.  The little Sony system is good enough for this room.  The is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks again!
