CLOUD ATLAS
« on: 2 Nov 2012, 02:06 am »
Saw this movie today, after reading both positive & negative reviews, I can understand the audience at the Toronto International Film Festival gave the movie a 10 minute standing ovation. IMHO, it's one of Tom Hank's greatest acting achievements. I will be seeing this movie again soon as it's one of them movies that entertain more the 2nd time than it does the 1st, pretty much like Avatar did for me. Practically every actor in this movie played 4-6 characters and during the credits, each actor's multiple characters are highlighted.

I see many 2013 Academy Award nominations for this movie. For me, it was the best movie I've seen to date in 2012. 4.5 out of 5 stars!  :thumb:

Cheers,

Robin,

I'm so happy to hear you likes this movie.  I've been waiting for it since unheard about it.  Because if the difficult story, I thought it could either be great or a total bomb. The Warchowski, er, siblings haven't had a winner since Matrix part one.  Everything else they have done has been a disappointment. My wife's cousin did some editing for them on a bad movie, Speed Racer, and said they were great to work with.  Their Chicago studio is well hidden and they are very reclusive.  They really need a new movie success.  A three hour movie gave me cause for concern.

Looking forward to seeing it soon. Will post my thoughts but I am encouraged.

Thanks

Jack

Well Jack, like I said, both good and bad reviews have been published so I'm curious how others will see it. I went in w/o knowing anything about the storyline and I still enjoyed this movie immensely. The whole 2.75 hour movie held me capitive, there was simply no weak moments for me. But I really need to see this movie again and I'm thinking of seeing it in IMAX next week.

Cheers,

We all have different tastes in movies but if I don't like it, I will be respectful in my comments.  I'm only rude in the sports discussions.  Okay, and maybe the Jimi Hendrix thread I started.  That got a bit out of control.

The thing I like about the Warchowski Bros is they never follow formula.  They keep you guessing and when it works, it's great. I'm familiar with the story line and can't believe they would choose to make such a difficult story into a movie. It took guts to attempt to bring this to the big screen.  I'm purpose not bringing up specifics to avoid spoilers.

Cheers

Most of the criticisms I have heard have centered around "bad accents" and "overacting", but I'm still looking forward to seeing it with an open mind.  It sounds like something very interesting and different, and I'm hoping I will enjoy it.

I expected to hate it, but ended up loving it, and I will also see it again.  It combines so many unrelated movie genres (in the six inter-twined stories).  Ultimately, it's a sci-fi which spans many centuries, but it's mixed with high-seas adventure, oddball British comedy, etc.  It flew by very fast for me.

Difficult to follow. Took about an hours worth of movie to begin to see how things interacted. Yeah, that one group with the bad Mad Max accent could have been done better.

Seems like I've heard nothing but negative feedback on this film, so I'm glad to see one of my favorite AC members offer  up some praise....this will likely be a rental for me, but I'm eager to see it.

Noooo....if I could just have those 3 hours and $10.75 back I'd buy a ticket to Argo like I should have. It was only 10 minutes later at the same theater and we should've just waited.

It certainly wasn't the worst movie made of seen - but, there are so many things I could've done better than wasting time and money on this one. Much of the malice towards it was the 172 minute length - egads, more suffering then required for me :|
