If can get a chance to listen to Salk speakers, you should.

You'll either have to e-mail Jim to listen to some near you or go through this big list! http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=20721.0

Welcome Batsthecat.  I lot of good info here so far.   I'll endorse Audiogon as a rather good source for high-end gear, research everything however.  On-line retailers is (IMO) another good road to take.  No middle man mark ups to deal with and most if not all have good return policies.  For speakers companies there's Axiom, Aperion, Ascend Acoustics, Outlaw Audio and Emotiva to name a few.  I have dealt with Axiom and Aperion and must say they are terrific vendors to work with and you get exceptional cost to performance ratios.  Keep us posted on your search.  I also think it's important to iterate that higher $$$ does not always give you better performance.  Again, research and demos (where possible) is recommended.

And keep us posted as to your progress.

Kinda feels like getting a lecture from 12 different professors at once don't it?

I went with new speakers- HoytBedford 1's, and a vintage amp & preamp/tuner,both McIntosh, from AudioClassics for my latest system. That was $3,000 well spent. My budget was $5,000 so I added a flat screen & dvd/cd players. I still have enough in an envelope waiting for the turntable new or vintage that catches my eye. Specs are one thing but let your ears be your guide. Leave enough left over for the mandatory Lava lamp too !

Nice job! You have done better than 99 per cent of newbies. Well done. One piece of advice on vintage stuff - save a little money for repairs. It's just inevitable.

Tastes change over time so you'll change gear but that is a solid base. Enjoy.

I would get the speakers first and build a system around them. Audiogon is a great source for used equipment but buying used could have some pitfalls, make sure whomever you buy from has impeccable feedback to minimize problems.

Good luck and happy listening, remember, this is a fun hobby..

Spend some of that on room treatment.
