Hifiman HE-Adapter for less noise?
« on: 27 Oct 2012, 01:31 am »
I would like to drive my Audeze LCD-2's from the spkr taps of my amps (Mastersound Compact 845 SET, or alternatively my TBI Millenia); unfortunately with either I get lots of noise/hiss. I've read that using the Hifiman HE-Adapter might reduce the noise (as well as provide protection for the amp & cans).

Does anyone have any experience/thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered the Millenia to drive headphones exclusively: hifiman HE-6 and Fostex T50rp Paradox.

Jan from TBI sent me a couple of resistor network schemas (similar to the he-adapter) to drive them properly.

If you are interested I will put the schemas here.

I use the adapter with a 300b set and a large 150 watt hybrid amp.  It works well and there is no noise at all.  You definitely need the resistors for a tube amp that is transformer coupled or you can damage the amp.  You can use another design, but the he adapter is pretty reasonable for getting started.

As said before, DIY is a good option:

Basically, an adapter prevents the amplifier from doing something bad to the headphones. You can vary the size of resistors depending on the amp output.
