Music Server Power Supply.
« on: 23 Oct 2012, 06:21 pm »
This was originally posted in Ted B's CAPS V2+, build thead as I thought it might be helpful for someone else on a similar path. I didn't intend to hijack.  I'll change title to something more appropiate.

Can I take this onto a side topic ask ask about power supplies? I've built several desktop computers so I know a bit about ATX type power supplies, but when it comes to audio specific computers like this, I imagine the power requirement is minimal.  Long story made short, I suppose I don't really know what I don't know, so I'm looking for general info and guidance.

Other than satisfying the power requirement of the computer, I guess quiet is a must. What else should I be concerned with? If this were powering stuff like amps or preamps it would be more important...no? I don't know much about low voltage audio gear, everything I have plugs into wall and I assume any transformers are within devices themselves or perhaps wall warts. Can this be as simple as a wall wart?

Any good reads on the subject?

I feel this will do better as its own topic, so as to not detract from Ted's sever thread.

Todd, can you rename it then.  It's a little confusing.  Thx

I used a 150 W Pico PSU for my system (Intel DG45FC+E5200+DVDROM+1xSSD+2x3.5" HDD).  It never broke a sweat.  I only replaced it with a SeaSonic SS-300ES when I moved to a larger case and added another 3.5" and 3x120mm fans.  To be honest, I would have tried to keep it in, but it didn't have enough power connections.

I'm using an 80 watt fanless power supply in my music server build.

My CPU only has 35W of TDP and I'm using a SSD. For just playback, I doubt I'm pulling more than 5-10 watts.
