Light Harmonic
Von Schweikert Audio
MIT Cables

Decent sound. A little harsh when piano gets loud. Good bass control from my chair... Not really a lot here that is blowing my mind.

Tyson's Comments - No female vocals in this room, just a piano track, but still pretty bright/hard sounding when those upper register keys are struck.  I thought the VS speakers sounded bright with tube amps yesterday, and they still sound pretty much the same way today with Solid State amps.  Moving on...

They are both vey upfront and explicit about their preferences (and at times they disagree on certain rooms). Pez and Tyson both readily agree that others may view rooms differently. Different strokes for different folks. Part of the hobby.

And IIRC, they really liked the Active VR-44 at a previous show.

Shows are also far from ideal listening settings.

Also, far from the most damning praise of a room from these guys. And they didn't get a chance to play their own prepared sampler, so we unfortunately we don't get comments based on recordings that they know much better.

I got to play some of my samples and wasn't impressed whatsoever.   I'm sure it just wasn't at it's best that day.  Next day was better I'm sure.  :dunno:

I am crossing my fingers that the VR-44s will be at the Chicago Axpona show in the coming year.

I'd rather that Pez and Tyson be frank than sugarcoat things. Like it was said earlier, they are very open about their biases so that is cool. They did say they liked the VR-22 though.

Yes, everybody is different. That makes the world go round. Hotel rooms are not an ideal listening set up. I've had my Anni's for four years now. They are truly the best I've heard! Can't wait to get them back from VSA as the new MKII's!

I made a point of listening to the VR5 Annis at RMAF as I have an older pair that I've considered upgrading. The Harmonics room was eye catching at least with the special illuminated DAC but the speakers were angled in far more sharply than I've ever positioned mine. All told, I thought some of the piano recording used when I was there was ultra-clear in some parts but also a little harsh in others, so I left the room none the wiser -- was it the speakers, the cables, the digital front end, the recording or the room? Impossible for me to say. I produced a lengthier write up of my whole RMAF experience here: http://audiomatters.blogspot.com/2012/10/rmaf-2012-quick-reactions.html

Then lets refrain from comments like "This guy doesn't know what he's talking about!"

Unfortunately, the beautiful Da Vinci DAC was brand new, with "zero" break in, and the MIT cables were also brand new.  At our factory, using a less expensive DAC and cables, we hear absolutely no brightness or harshness "with our own equipment."  It is quite true that this very same factory demo VR-5 Anniversary Mk2 speaker system DID sound bright in this particular situation.  It goes to show how break-in will "make or break" a demo!  Let's hope that no one reading this forum will argue the silly point that "there's no such thing as break-in!"
Happy Listening,
Albert

Light Harmonic has the golden problem. They are back ordered 8 weeks. Don't ask me how I know  I did hear it in Singapore with the mighty 11s and darn did that system sound good with the same amps too. Still I heard from independent sources that the LH,KR, VSA sounded very, very good. I'll chalk this one up to individual tastes.

I agree Jack, I told you years ago that KR and VSA is the right combination to make real music.

Good luck with your show.

Who cares if some people don't like VS in a hotel room? I am more and more interested in these speakers. As they say, even bad publicity is good publicity.

All,

All new equipment requires a certain amount of hours of break-in in order to reach it's full potential. Speaking of break-in, just heard from Albert and my VR-5 Anniversary MKII upgrade sould be completed this friday.  :D When I get them back, I'll be starting a new thread on the experience.

By the way, we here on the east coast just went through Hurricane Sandy. I was one of the fortunate one's not to lose power. Let's hope others who had more damage can get back to normal very soon.
