Boot Camp
« on: 21 Oct 2012, 06:30 pm »
I use Boot Camp on my Mac from time to time, but never have installed a word processing program for the Windows side. I found one called "Download Word Processor Free" which looks like it downloads a sort of Microsoft Word imitation. The site has 68 positive reviews.  Has anybody used this successfully or can anyone suggest an alternative other than just buying the Microsoft version for about $120- which obviously I don't want to do?

Heres a link to the site. They call it "Office Suite X."

You might also want to try Apache Open Office.

I would avoid that site and downloads.    Follow Steve's advice here

Open Office, now under the Apache umbrella (previously Oracle and prior to that, Sun) is a long established open source office suite with a large community and there are regular updates.  The applications default to Open Office document formats, but you have the option of saving to Microsoft and other formats if you need cross program compatability.

I do prefer Microsoft Office overall and it would definitely be my choice in a workplace environment, but Open Office will satisfy most home users.  I'm an advanced Word user, and I sometimes have trouble getting the results I want with more advanced formatting.

I bought a program called Apple IWORK. This program works on the OSX side of Bootcamp. It costs about $100.
It enables the user to work in Apple's version of MS Word which is Pages. When you create and save a document, you have the option of saving the file as .doc file or a Pages file.

So in essence you are not creating the file in MS Word, but in Pages and coverting it when saved to a .doc file.

Don't know if you are interested in this.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I will try openoffice.  I have Iworks and use it on the Mac side, in fact, I also have Microsoft word for Macs there, too. Pretty much all I do is word processing, but on Boot Camp I have a map program called All Topo that will run only on Windows. I have WIndows XP.  Geowak, your info may be useful to me in the future.

I use Open Office all the time as a Word/Excel replacement.  Pages on the mac is a stunning document creator in the PDF format.  Just select "native PDF" fonts in the inspector, drag and drop any number of different graphics files (using the auto centering feature), export as PDF "best"  and behold!  You have a document you can open on any machine, zoom in all you like and you will find NO jaggies on the text.  I have had windows users what on earth I used to create sales documents and when I told them it was a $20 program on a Mac, they were flabbergasted!
