Can I say that Canada Post sucks ?
« on: 18 Oct 2012, 03:12 pm »
Purchased a Sanyo Plus 35 tuner from an eBayer in Canada on 9/17 and still no delivery as of 10/18.

All they can say is that its coming via Canada post. Stupid-heads holding stuff up.  Should I be surprised ? (I think not, don't want to worry unnecessarily, but)...

Care to comment ?

Pretty rare that it's taking that long from Canada.  The USA is really easy to import from Canada.  Going the other way around is miserable at times.  When I sold my Atma-Sphere amps they sat in Canadian customs for nearly 4 weeks.   :duh:

At least Canada Post has tracking numbers that can cross borders, unlike USPS (unless you choose their most expensive shipping options).

I'll bet USPS is holding it on the US side.  Export control is very quick.

I've had to escalate resolution of the the sale with eBay, as I'm not getting communication from the seller, so maybe I'm too quick to criticize CA post.  Caveat emptor, I guess.

No tracking number given? That's a red flag for me. I make tracking a condition of any sale or purchase I make. When selling internationally I explicitly state that the buyer must accept all risk if they do not choose the more expensive shipping options that would include tracking numbers and insurance.

If you have a tracking number, then it is just held up in customs.
If you do NOT have a tracking number, then i would bet the unit was never sent.
I do not buy from Candian sellers, i will buy from Canadian businesses.
Canucks are too varied. from good to totally crazy.
Canada is like Florida IMO for buying, way too difficult to trust. I am certain plenty of good  sellers there. but way too many total losers in the mix to take the chance.
Canadians feel free to roast me for my choices, freely given.
(I also avoid buying anything from Detroit, New York City, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana if that makes anyone feel better. so you all can frag me.. LOL)
I am certain plenty of wonderful folks live in those areas.. but the percentages of flakes is just way too high for me to bother taking a chance.

Hooray !  :D
The clouds may be parting. I heard from seller and got CA post tracking ##. Pkg is at JFKUSA, so with luck will have it in a few days.

Thanks all for the helpful posts. I continue my perhaps over enthusiastic trust in eBay sellers.

You're way to paranoid.  I buy from everywhere.

Ive sent and received at least a hundred parcels from my homeland Canuckistan to the US.
All audio related.....expecting one from GR soon right now.

I've been lucky no damage, but sometimes you do have to wait a long time.

Stuff that has to go through customs takes forever.  The wonders of free trade!  I wonder who it is free for?  Last week I had a package go through customs:  $40 worth of Multimaster blades.  They added 3$ of sales tax and 11$ of handling fees!  How does that add up to free trade?

As a canuck I think the opposite - I much prefer Canada and US postal service for between country shipping over all the courier companies.  My experience over many purchases is our two postal services actually talk to each other and work together to get you your parcel faster and at less cost.  Unlike Fedex.ca and UPS.ca.  I mostly insist on purchases going through postal service - although have one on the way via fedex which is sitting in Oregon somewhere.  Never had one take over a month - that would be frustrating.

Elizabeth - love your Crazy Canuck stereotype - we work hard at that up here but sadly get mostly portrayed as polite, boring and stuck in the snow (hopefully listening to tunes).

So, I did finally receive the Sanyo Plus 35 tuner, and have been listening periodically for a couple weeks now.

First, I must emphatically retract my remarks about Canada Post. The seller neglected to send the item for about five weeks. Once I was able to convince him to ship the item I purchased, it arrived within four days and excellent condition. So, apologies to CA Post.

Second, this is one nice little 'tuna' !  I suprised myself in that I never gave tuner sound quality all that much thought; I had been using a Hafler DH-330 FM tuner I assembled from the 'kit' many years ago, but like many I drifted away as the servings on FM and AM became lesser, and more bland. I mainly listen now to NPR and the local oldies station.

The Sanyo has much better tone and spatial retrieval than the Hafler. The Hafler wins slightly in sensitivity to lock in on stations. I'm listening in a full basement and using only a Terk powered FM antenna, so my reception could certainly do with a better set-up.  The Sanyo dislpay is of course fun to use; I need to give the tuner a little better pride of place in my cabinet so as to more fully enjoy it.

The tuner 'bug' has not yet bitten to the extent I'm looking for Scotts, Fishers, etc, but the advice from ACers has been very helpful. The Sanyo is just what I needed to refresh my FM listening, even though it be limited here in SE Minnesota.

Thanks again to all, and

Happy Listening !    :D

They added 3$ of sales tax and 11$ of handling fees!  How does that add up to free trade?

Was it UPS or FedEx?

When I send stuff back and forth to Canada, I find USPS is the cheapest.  The $11 handling fee is likely the brokerage fee, which isn't something that I have never been charged by USPS or Canada Post but I've paid through the nose for with UPS and FedEx.

The hook is set.
You really should post some pics of your tuners...

I suspect Canadian post may be better than UPS/Fedex:

It was Customs Canada that charged the fees.  USPS is absolutely the cheapest but if customs gets their fingers on it...
