Supravox 215 Signature Bicone vs. Tang Band W8-1808
« on: 15 Oct 2012, 04:39 pm »
I am trying to decide which one to use in an open baffle configuration, most likely with bass (<120-140Hz) and treble (>8-10k) support.

Has anyone compared these two drivers?  If so, I would be very happy to hear your thoughts. Heck, I'd be happy to hear some opinions even based on hearsay and speculation...! :green:

I have only used the 1808 right now.  I like it for 200-20K as I use it with a lower section of subs.  There is some top end rise but I have a way to flatten it out in my set up thus providing a more balanced sound.  I have not used the 215s?  sorry..  Try the Dayton audio 8's too.  there mids are even smoother than the TB

jparkhur,

Yeah I have a way of flatten out the response in my setup too so I am not too worried about that.

These two drivers look very very similar on paper so it would be very interesting to know how they differ subjectively.

I also wonder how these two cone drivers would fair against a BG Neo10 if the passband for comparision is tightened up a bit to 300-3000 Hz...?

I would take a neo 10 and neo 3 over a fullrange driver any day.  they are much smoother.  But the neo 10 can not get high enough to cover the range.  i have a neo3 right now and it is so smooth....very nice to listen too.   I like the simplicity of full range and no xos.  Thus the reason i do both GR stuff and fullrange.  Only if the neo 3 could get to 200 hz.. that would be great...  One smooth full range ribbon subbed with a low end driver...  i like the TB, but also like the Fos 125 too.  JP

Do you mean smoother in terms of frequency response? If so, EQ will go a long way to put these two different types of drivers on an equal footing (as far as the sweet spot is concerned).  Other parameters to consider are of course dispersion (1-0 to FR), detail resolution (1-1), sensitivity (2-1 to FR), dynamics (3-1 to FR) and SPL capability (4-1 to FR...?).

I like the simplicity of full range and no xos.  Thus the reason i do both GR stuff and fullrange.

LOL, I wish space and budget would allow me multiple systems - I need to get it right from the beginning :)  I'm also attracted to the simplicity of FR and XO-less systems but if the Neo10 is *much* better than either of the TB and SV, I'd consider changing direction.

Only if the neo 3 could get to 200 hz.. that would be great...  One smooth full range ribbon subbed with a low end driver...

That would be the RD-models from B&G

nicoch46,

Which model Supravox do you have and what are the dimensions of your baffle? What amp do you use on it?
