Ongoing Problem
« on: 13 Oct 2012, 07:06 pm »
Hi, I have this ongoing problem of my right front speaker cutting out. I though perhaps the problem was in the pre-amp, changed pre-amp and problem still persists. Then changed interconnects thinking maybe had a bad wire, problem is still there. Okay maybe it is something to do with usb output from computer, changed to toslink from Sony player, right channel is still out. Re-connect speaker wire, problem persists.

Thing is right channel will cut out but then after awhile it come back on full power without a problem. When it cuts out it sounds like a connection problem. All indicator lights show green.

So I'm thinking the right channel of my BDA-1 is cutting out, but lights show its getting a signal.

Anyone have ideas as to what is going on and what the problem might be?

Thanks

Phil A

Sounds like it could be the source and locking on a digital signal.  I had that same problem a bit ago with an SP1.7 and a 14BSST when I was using that combo.  I even switched channels with the interconnects from the amp to the preamp and the problem went to the other channel.  Most of the time, it would happen and take 3-4 minutes before the other channel came on.

Thanks, I don't quite understand. I know it's not the speaker cause I swapped them around awhile back and problem is still on right channel. I discovered awhile ago taking the top plate off my 3B SST/2, that a ribbon connection slipped off the right transformer probably due to vibration, put that on securely. Problem though still persisted.

I think it maybe it's a combination of a worn USB connection on laptop and cheap interconnects and not having a speaker device selected on computer soundcard. Since this morning everything is still working good after making sure everything is solidly connected. But I've been through this routine before, except for speaker device selection :?

Okay, the problem is still persists and I'm wondering if the output voltage from the BDA-1 is too strong for the pre-amp. I'm using my Yamaha in pure direct mode and the right channel cut out. I determined that the signal is going through the BDA-1 on both channels. So the problem is either the pre-amp inputs are being over loaded, right channel cutting out or my Bryston 3B SST/2 is not amplifying the signal in the right channel.

So not being technical savy, would the output levels/signal strength on computer soundcard be causing the output levels on BDA-1 to be too strong for pre-amp to process, incurring failure down the road from frequent use? :?

From what I have experienced, if you're talking an analog connection, you'll get distortion on the channel.  I've had that happen.  With a digital connection, it is different.  I don't think the voltage output by the BDA-1 is really that great.  I know with the Harmony One Remote you can tweak down the output a small amount so I would suspect there is a code that James can give you to try.

Yes its an analog connection. I suspect the problem is too much resolution in the signal for the pre-amp to process properly, over heats and shuts down. Everything was working fine an then nothing, and the spl wasn't real loud.

But I have to eliminate the amp from the equation which I will try next by just crossing the interconnect wire. :|

It's your Yamaha pre amp dying. Trying tapping on the top of the preamp to see if it's the preamp going in and out. It doesnt matter I am sure it's your preamp.

Thanks for the reply. I swapped the interconnects and the right channel went out again. So that means the problem is in right channel of my SST/2 amp. I didn't think it was the amp because the clipping light stays green.

Anyway I swapped in my 3B SST amp to be sure, so far right channel is still working. I'll give it a week or two to see if all goes well, before I send in my 3B SST/2. :|
