SMGA's refurbed FINALLY !
« on: 7 Oct 2012, 08:51 pm »
Well after a very long time of living with my SMGA's this weekend I finally did the deed . I had orders new socks and a little can of the glue last fall before the cold weather hit . At the time the very nice Shirley ? in the parts dept asked me , "are you sure you only want the 1 can "  So fearing I would need more I ordered another can last week . Turns out 1 was more than enough , but didn't want to run out of material half way through the job . I was dreading this job , thinking I would screw it up and trash them . The gods were smiling on Sat as it went really well . Mine had some bad delam in the center around the tuning knob and at the ends . Got it done and the wait was on for the glue to dry . So about 1pm today we hooked them up again . OMG !!!  They sounded not too bad in that room before but now even better . The biggest deal is the bass , I can't believe how much bass I have now . We tried a 8" energy sub and liked the Mag's alone , they don't need a sub , unless it's a really good one . The new room is 12 x17 and the mags fill it perfectly.   My roommate has a set of MMG's he bought this past winter , some of you may remember that tale from an earlier post . We used the MMG's in that room last night and we both agree , the SMGA is a better sounding speaker to our ears . The mmg had some more detail , but everything else is better on the old 1986 Smga's . Thanks to Magnepan for supporting their older models .

I've got high-end-part versions of those SMGA crossovers in my modded MMG's and they sure do sing. Those look really nice. They seem a little wider in the picture than an MMG too, is that right? Beautiful setup, congrats.  :thumb:

BTW if you want to add a sub, I highly recommend the Epik Legend.  :thumb:

Congratulation!  I too restored a pair of 1980's Magnepan's, MG2.5's.  I was very apprehensive until I pulled the socks off and prepped and reglued the delaminations, which was minimal.

I have to agree that the older Magnepan's have a sound that is very endearing and is timeless.  It feels pretty darn good to have done the work myself as I feel apart if them now as corny as that sounds.

p.s. It never hurts to have a pair of small subs to support the bottom octaves. Plus two or more subs smooths out uneven room nodes.

When I was trying to revive my I-C's  I nearly became a part of them thanks to that accursed glue!
There was no hope for them as the mylar was torn but parts of them live on in two systems today.

Thanks boys , put a lot of hours on then this weekend all I can say is wow !  As mentioned , doing the work myself does make it seem more special even . They are signed  11-11-86 , so will 26 years old in a few weeks . We have tried the Energy ES-8 sub but it doesn't seem to keep up . But I tell ya , in this room there seems to be no shortage of bass , I was giving them a good run with the volume control today and you can feel the bass and they play very loud with no sign of stress .  And Rclarke , yes they are wider than the MMG's .

Now I have to get myself in gear and do the crossover upgrade , everyone says it takes them to another level .
