Music server using computer running Ubuntu?
« on: 4 Oct 2012, 03:49 am »
I have a computer that crashed on me several years ago.    It seemed cost prohibitive to fix it, so my wife and I opted to purchase a new computer.  The old pc ended up collecting dust in the basement.

Recently, I mentioned to a friend that I had this old computer sitting around, that it wouldn't boot up.  He suggested that I try to load Ubuntu Linux on the machine, and PRESTO, I have a working computer!

If possible, I would like to use this machine as a dedicated music server.  Currently, I have all of my music loaded on a hard drive in mp3 format.  I had been using I-tunes for playback on a different machine.

Do any of you know of a music server that I can use with the Linux operating system?  I do have access to the internet with this computer.  Any advice is appreciated.  My knowledge/experience in working on pc's is limited, but I'll give anything a try.

Thanks guys,

Tom

Under Linux, you would run MPD (Music Player Daemon) as the player itself. Files can be sourced locally or from remote file services on your network.

I've used the Vortexbox version of an integrated Linux server and player for a long time and it works very well on minimal hardware. There are quite a few threads here on how to do that or go to their site directly. You don't need their appliance and they provide good support for new users. www.vortexbox.org is a good starting point. Have fun!

Thank you for the info!  I'll give this a try and report back.
