Someones garbage could your riches :)
« on: 3 Oct 2012, 03:28 am »
Sadly, I was driving by a local street in Chicago.  I came across a motorcycle accident and my nosey friend wanted me find a way for me to park my car and go checkout what had happen.  I dropped my friend off at the side of the street, parked my car, walked over to the accident scene and next to a donation box right on the floor I found a boxful of Vinyl, I mean tons of Vinyl.  Somewhere in the range of almost 300 or more, so I pick the boxes up, placed them in my car and kindly drove off.

Michael Jackson, Billie Holiday, Beatles, Classics  and so many others.  Wow, I couldn't believe that I just found a treasure sitting there waiting for me and the funny thing that their covers were all intact, clean and the records were in excellent condition.   :thumb: :thumb:  eBay here I come!
"APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE LABELING MY FINDING AS THEFT, LABELING ME A DOUCHEBAG, THIEF, ETC! WHICH ISN'T THE FACTS! BEFORE POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENTS PLEASE READ THE POST CAREFULLY, "NEXT TO A DONATION BOX, IN THE GROUND, ON THE SIDEWALK STREET NOT INSIDE THE DONATION BUT OOOOUTSIDE! AGAIN, OUTSIDE, OUTSIDE AND LASTLY OUTSIDE!" FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT WANT TO KNOW THE OF THE STREET IN CHICAGO, IT WAS ON DIVERSEY AND MELVINA.” ENOUGH OF THE IDIOTIC COMMENTS!~

My neighbour came up to me, you still play records don't you?
He gave me over a 100 records, he didn't want anything for it, he would throw em away.
Okee, I got them, and threw em away myself!

Yeah, I got 2 boxes of "donations" from a friend. There were some treasures in there (a few Columbia 6 eyes). Now that those are cleaned and stored away in my collection I am pondering if it is worthwhile cleaning the rest and giving a listen or just tossing them. None look to be in pristene condition, lots of pops and clicks I'm sure, and all are classical so little aftermarket worth.

Oh, and there are about 20 of those old story records, like Peter and the Wolf and Treasure Island and such. I do remember listening to those as a kid and have fond memories of them.

So you stole the records from a donation box, now you are going to sell them on Ebay.  FYI this is considered theft and there are laws against that in Chicago.

Usually one or two bucks each.  I check out quite a few good will stores, but only for CDs.

Vinyl usually isn't worth looking for a thrift stores. You will find a lot of englebert Humperdink and 50's and 60's classical and compilation albums. Occaisionally someone donates good vinyl, but it is rare. Vinyl usually sells for a buck at the thrift stores. CD's are a better purchase at thrift stores.

Sounds to me like you stole from a charity and intend to sell your stolen goods for a personal profit. I believe the term for someone like this is "douchebag".

I believe the correct term is thief.  This thread should have been called "Someones donation could be your loot." :o

Ha! I stand corrected. Seriously, I have all kinds of records stacked up in my living room. There are even some speakers on the floor. And a couch. Hell, if you stop looking around donation stations and start opening people's front doors, you'd be amazed at the stuff people have just lying around for the taking. The world is your oyster!!

I agree on the theft issue.  It is no different from taking stuff left at the back of the Goodwill store.  I used to work a block from a Salvation Army store.  If cool stuff was outside I'd be there when the doors opened and ask that they price the stuff.

And I have found some amazing LPs at thrift stores, and at amazing prices.  That's part of the game.  And the fun.

There were 5 replies before the word theft came into play. I was surprised it didn't happen sooner as it came to mind right away with me

That's exactly what I thought when I read this thread this morning.

The first thing that came to my mind was, "WOW! This guy is bragging about taking some records that have been donated to a charity?! And he actually wants  to profit from the ones he doesn't keep.".

If he had any ethics, he'd donate any $ he makes from ebay to the charity he took them from.

A bit of a brazen initial post, I'll agree, but maybe time to lay off before this thread hits the IGWB.
I think all points have been made and heard.

No you moron~ they weren't "STOLEN" from a donation box, I didn’t go inside the donation box.  I stumbled upon a boxful of vinyl, which happen to be near the donation box, outside the donation box, in the street! FYI this isn't considered to be "theft" Funny how you label things, "stole, theft etc"  What a genius of great mind of yours!   :thumb:  Are you unhappy or jealous because you didn't stumble upon some good luck?  Apparently so that you have to place labels and stereotype on people that you don't even know.     Apparently, some of you misunderstood the whole thread post. Before assuming please do yourselves a favor and inquire before starting a fire that you can't put out!
