Replacement mats for platter with a raised area
« on: 2 Oct 2012, 10:36 pm »
Does anyone have a TT with a raised area on the platter as in this photo?

The silver area around the spindle is slightly raised, so replacing the mat with one that only has a spindle hole will not work.

I am sure a better mat would make a difference on this table since the stock mat is pretty bad.

Any recommendations, including DIY, would be helpful.

Hi there,
Maybe try a thin cork or acrylic mat with a label recess, mounted upside down. Then you will have a flat surface to try normal mats on. (I would use acrylic, and mount it to the platter with a coating of 3M Spraymount Repositionable Adhesive.)

I imagine you can DIY one.  I'd use an Exacto knife installed into a compass to make the hole as perfectly round as possible.  You probably would have to go around a few times before you've completely cut it through.  Cork would probably cut a bit better than a firm rubber.

You might try Herbie's mats. He was able to make one for the Empire 208, which has a raised center, with no problem.

Thanks!

All great ideas.

I did contact Herbie's via email to see if he has one.

I'm not sure the label recess on most mats is deep enough, but it sounds like a definitely worth a try.

An Exacto at the end of a compass sounds like another good solution.

I can also use the existing mat as a template.
