Ignored Audio Gear?
« on: 29 Sep 2012, 02:10 pm »
This spring and summer will definitely go into the books as one to be remembered. Our best friend, Hector, required orthopaedic surgery on both of his knees this year due to torn cruciate ligaments. One of his restrictions is not to use stairs until his bones properly heal. Like most dogs, Hector must be glued to your hip when you are walking around the house and here is the catch, my audio gear is downstairs in the basement. Carrying Hector's 90 lbs weight up and down stairs is not a physical issue, but I refrain from this in case I ever slipped and the consequences would be horrible.

So, since May, I have mostly listened to music on my iPod or computer and perhaps half a dozen times on my audio gear downstairs. What I do is power my system up and let it play a CD every other day. Lady Laundrew and I am certainly looking forward to Hector's full recovery.

I am very curious as to how long other individuals have went without the enjoyment of their audio gear?

Be well...

About 8 years when I was reconstructing my post divorce period. All my early gear was left behind with the "ex".

Buy a steel baby fence and reinforce it to keep the dog from going downstairs or simply close the door leading to the basement when you go down. You have tens of thousands of dollars invested to not ignore your system.

3 months and counting. I packed everything up at the end of June and moved into rental with no room for gear. I'm moving again at the end of October into a house built in 1950,
once the new place is gutted and remodeled I can once again have music (think December). You're all invited to the house warming party.

Several months several times.  Lately, except for a couple of people over on a few occasions, I have not been able to listen to music more than a few hours over the past 6-7 months.  Too many things to do and working towards that goal of moving/retiring and having time to do things like listen to music.

Interesting idea but not really an option for us as Hector spends enough time in his "condo" (crate) when we are out of the house and it would not be fair to our big guy to ignore him. On the bright side, when I start spending more time with my audio gear it will be a real treat to evolve from the iPod back to the Beasties and JBLs. I still have been purchasing music as usual this year and now have approximately 120 CDs waiting patiently to be played on my gear.

I just went 3 weeks without my Esoteric X-05 while I sent it back to CA for a mechanical repair.  In the interim had to use our mass market Sony carousel DVD player.  Looking for the Mister Yuk sticker among my emoticon collecction.  Can't find it. Oh well, YUK!!

Having an almost 2 year old daughter, I rarely have time to sit down and fully enjoy listening to my music the way I used to.  When she's asleep, it's not like I can listen at any volume I want to.  When she's awake, the stereo gets dominated by her music.  No regrets whatsoever.  I've found a new way to enjoy music - dancing and playing around with my beautiful little girl.

Granted, your situation is different than mine, but I think my advice is the same - the point of music is the musical quality, not sound quality.  Sure, better sound quality enhances the enjoyment, but its not absolutely necessary, is it?

In your shoes, I'd get an inexpensive setup that you can keep as a permanent secondary system.  One that'll stay in the living room/whatever room for when you're up there doing what you do - dinner, guests, etc.   maybe something like an Arcam Solo and some on-wall speakers like Totem Dreamcatchers with their optional wall mount brackets.  There's a ton of great sounding gear that's inexpensive out there.  Even simpler would be something like Audioengine powered speakers and a laptop.

Just like "ignor"ing one's wife or the other half, it can't be too long.

PS: Stereo LP music via my all-tube rig is sota my 2nd wife!

Like others, I have relocation issues.

It's been 6 months since I've has system 1 up and running (Bryston/PMC).  I did get system 2 up a month ago (NAD/Allison), but my CD player died in the move.  I'm holding off moving the BDP into system 2 (so far).

The Hafler, IMF, Pioneer, and Harbeth gear isn't even on the to do list yet.

Audio wise, this was a great weekend as my gear was used both Saturday and Sunday. I visited my favourite, used CD store Friday evening and walked out with almost 2 dozens CDs. Ironically, I purchased a $0.99 CD based on what the cover looked like and it has a few great tunes on it. on my next visit to Sonic Boom, I plan on spending around $20 on their $0.99 specials based on cover appeal and see how it goes.

Hector is a handsome boy!  Hope he is recovering nicely.

Our beautiful Great Pyrenees recently underwent an operation to remove his gall bladder.  But my audio rig is on the main floor, so while recovering, he was able to just curl up on the floor in front of one of the speakers while the music was pouring forth.  I think he likes Mozart.  In this household, he has to be a music lover.

Thank god we have these beautiful canine souls to cheer us up and teach us what is really important in life!  I hope you and Hector have many more happy years together.

Thank you for your kind words and I also wish that your friend recovers quickly. Mozart? He certainly has great taste in music. . It is very difficult to see our friends go through these procedures, they give so much of themselves and ask for little in return. Your words "teach us what is really important in life" are most elegant and reminds me of a quote I read on the internet a little while ago and went something along these lines, "If they are no dogs in heaven, I want to go where they are."

It would certainly work for me  :D

My audio gear is being ignored this week because I'm on the road and not able to crank it up.  Mrs HsvHeelFan and the kids won't listen to it when I'm away.

I'll fix that as soon as I get home.  I'm already thinking what I want to hear.
