I will increase the options: you could buy a nice Chinese amp and modify it, where the circuit is bad. Some are so cheap that the chassis and power supply alone worth the price.Hope this help.
Tricky question. If you're looking for some fun than building might be right for you. But unless you have heard the amp before (that a friend built, say) you may be disappointed with the result with no recourse for getting your money back; people are very leery of buying used DIY. A better option may be to buy a commercial amp used. So long as you get an amp at a fair price you could always resell for about what you paid if you don't like the sound. It's a much safer way to get a good sounding amp IMO. And you may be able to get something for around the same price as a kit. What kits are you thinking of specifically?
That's an interesting idea actually... kinda like a best of both worlds sort of thing. Any reccomendations on said Chinese amps? I noticed some mods on some of the Yaqin models, but that's about as far as I've got in that department, so anything else I could look into would be great. Thanks for the idea!D
Hi Doug,Welcome to AC and the Tube-O-Phile Circle! It will help us to help you if you give us few hints about budget, listening prefs, speakers you are going to use? There are some very good Asian built integrated amps that might just be your ticket.Oh, and we need pictures of those nixie clocks!
Here's one for sale here that would be tough to beat at asking price. Is Wisconsin close by?http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=108312.0

I personally can't think of one for under $1k. Slightly over is a Rogue Cronus or early Rogue Tempest (the Tempest may not come with optional phono board, the Cronus comes with MM phono stage standard). If you change your mind and decide to go with seperates you surely can find a used amp/pre pair with phono. There's a Rogue 88/66 pair here on AC (sorry, I seem to only come up with Rogue options today). The Mesa Tigris in the trading post looks great too but I don't think it has phono section and it's out of your budget.
Well, I pulled the trigger on a SP3 from a member here on AC... hope to have it in a week or so. Let the fun, or insanity depending on who's asking, begin! LOL.Thanks for everyone's input. I'm sure I'll be doing a bunch of reading and asking questions once I start messing around with this thing.D
