Smaller Subwoofer still available in kit form?
« on: 8 Jun 2004, 04:57 am »
Is there the chance that VMPS could offer the Smaller Subwoofer in kit form with a 12" Megawoofer and a 12" PR for slot loading? The price list makes no mention of the various kit offerings. Does this mean that VMPS will no longer offer kits?

Kits for most speakers will remain available, however the cabinet for the Smaller Sub is not available.  If you want a Smaller Sub kit w/o cabinet it is $150 incl shipping and the Megawoofer adds $70.  Plans for the cabinet are included with the kit w/o.

At that price, I'd be an idiot not to recommend that to my friend who is soon going to be upgrading his subwoofer and main speakers I have two good choices of amplifier: a 500-watt Parts Express Class-G (Sunfire) plate amplifier of the same type that I am using for my own DIY sub, or a 380-watt amplifier. Which option would be better for the Megawoofer? I imagine the Megawoofer has a fairly low inductance as compared to the 12" Stryke Audio AV12 I am using for my personal subwoofer. Also, the flexibility of cabinet aesthetics associated with a kit offering appeals to me. All I'd have to do is make sure to maintain the internal volume of the enclosure and the dimensions of the slot that the passive radiator is loaded to.

I just read that the Megawoofer is an 8 ohm driver, but the dual 8-ohm voicecoil version is available. I need a 4-ohm load for my chosen amplifier.

How much is the extra charge for a Megawoofer wound with dual voicecoils? Does the power handling change at all or is it thermally limited? Also, could I get the kit without the crossover as well? I have an active crossover I plan to use.
