Interm CD storage options
« on: 16 Sep 2012, 03:57 pm »
I am still undecided as to what type of storage shelf to construct for my CDs, an interim solution was required as my CD collection has quickly out grown my filing cabinet. Our local Re-store had many steel storage cabinets for sale and this one found its way into the back of the PT Cruiser for a mere $30.00. Its storage capacity is 210 CDs per section for a total of 630 CDs. Thinking back, I should of purchased the 5 level unit, which would of provided storage for over 1000 CDs. While the cabinet is very plain, it is in my closet and you do not notice it.

Proper artwork over your CD collection always helps to set the "mood" for your listening session.

Love the artwork.
Agree media storage is difficult.
I try hard to arrange storage which fits in nooks and crannies, so it does not intrude into
living space.
I have a Leslie Dame 1,500 CD storage in the entryway to my apartment. It is as close to the door as allows the door to open fully. So the near end in just in the living area by a few inches.

Another two floor to almost ceiling DVD shelving units, handmade, are behind my Magnepans, backs to the side walls.
So they are both storage AND corner acoustic panels.
Another DVD storage is in the entryway to the bathroom.

My LPs take up a wall in the bedroom, and part of another. and next to the long set is another Leslie Dame 1,000 storage. (I had to take the door off the bedroom to allow the CD unit to be in that position in the little entryway, But it seemed to be worth it.)
So I have tons of stored media, and hardly am ever bothered by it's intrusion in my living space.

Have you considered sleeving them and storing in binders?  I finally gave up on keeping the jewel boxes about 12 years ago, got nice sturdy 3-ring binders and sleeved everything.  Before I went all digital last year, my collection took up 3 shelves of a bookcase that way, and was much easier to browse through.

Kind of reminds me of the Can-Am stuff (http://cdcabinet.com/).  I have some for DVDs and CDs and I'm trying to get the music collection digitized so I can leave them in the cabinets in a closet.

Now this is a great way to store CDs, I did consider this at one time but as I enjoy perusing the literature and cover art, I prefer to keep the jewel case with the CD.

Picked this up last Halloween and some reason, much of my Halloween stuff stays out year round. This picture is great because you get a different image depending on the viewer's angle.

Whooo, now that's a collection.  Most of these are classical and jazz records. :P

I kept the inserts, just stuck them in the sleeve adjacent to the disks.  Doubles the number of sleeves you need, but still a very compact way to store them.  Using double-sided sleeves, you still get 4 single CD albums per page.
