Low cost vinyl storage
« on: 16 Sep 2012, 02:44 pm »
Hello vinyl fans.

I am a relative noob here, but have been reading through the stickies, and some of the older threads that looked interesting.

While there seems to be quite a bit of advice for tables and carts, I am hard pressed to find any information regarding lp storage.

Even going to the vinyl and table retailers (online) didn't seem to yield any results.  :?

Any idea for low cost vinyl storage?  :dunno:

I don't have a large collection, but would like to have storage for up to roughly 500 LPs. Perhaps something that is modular, or can be added to later as your collection grows, would be great.

Are there any low cost options available?

Thanks,

-Dave

IKEA Expedit....all different versions of it.  Mine cover a small wall from top to bottom...5X5 cubicles.  One cubicle can store about +- 60-70 Lps.  Cannot be it for its sheer storage capacity....about $200.... More than enough for your collecting needs.  Oh, if you do not have sufficient LPS....can also be used for everything else!

Have any carpentry skills? Tools?. For the price of a sheet of 3/4" Baltic birch, you can build a very serviceable unit. It's fairly simple bookshelf construction. Plans can be had in a myriad of places. Just modify the dimensions to accommodate LPs.

Thanks for the idea, but the web site gave a $350.00 shipping quote for a $69.99 shelf!!!  :o

Devil Doc: I have no DIY skills.  That is a good idea though, as I have a cousin who does. Perhaps I can bribe him into whipping me up something, if a suitable (low cost) retail shelf or storage system cannot be found.

Where are you located? No IKEA stores nearby?

You can also possibly check craigslist locally for Expedits. Not sure how common they will be if an IKEA isn't close, but worth a shot. You can also search for Expedits on Amazon, and see if you get better shipping rates there (or even better an Expedit or something similar that is eligible for Amazon's free shipping).

eBay is another place that you might get better shipping rates for Expedits.

Yeah, I am in Des Moines, Iowa. There aren't any Ikea stores near me. I do have to say that I really liked the way they looked though.

Quick question, are these stackable? For example, if I buy a small one one, can I buy a larger one later and stack them together as one larger unit?

I use Expedit myself and like them a lot, but another very nice option that is shippable is www.lpbin.com. IKEA stuff is simply not packaged to ship, thus very expensive when they do.

Yes they are stackable. Sounds like you need to make a road trip to Chicago here. Great vinyl stores and loads of great live music.

Do you have a Target nearby? $69.99 plus tax.

I have this for my LP storage. Don't have near 500 yet, but I figure one of these can hold ~325-350 albums. I only own 120 titles, but with multiple album titles, I have about 160 LPs. I have 2 cubes filled, and a 3rd cube about 1/4 full. My closest Ikea is 6 hours away. My closest Target is 4 minutes, if I have to wait on the light. ;)

Years back I bought a pile of Target modular Sauder units for my LPs. I have 6,000 Lps in them.
I now limit my LP collection to only what fits in the shelves I now own.
I learned my lesson last time i had to move!!!

Kewl!  The same price as the Ikea stand but with a backing, which has always been the bugaboo with the Expedit, you either have uneven lp's or need to install a stop of some kind.  And if you need more upright storage, they also have the vertical unit:

+1. Although on backorder, I ordered one, looks very well built! I like the way you can flip through the vinyl, instead of having them stacked side by side.

Limit to 6k!!!  :green: :green: :green: I dream of the day I have to limit how many vinyls I can buy due to space, and not budget.  :P

I say buy more shelf than necessary.  The issue of adding a smaller unit etc...comes more expensive in the longer run.

I like the stand up version even more. It uses less "real estate" along the floor/wall. Thanks for the link.  :D

As as far as running out of storage space, it would take me a LONG time to get enough vinyl to fill one of these stands. If I ever did, I wouldn't mind buying another stand at that point. It would be for a good cause, and mean that I have built a healthy LP library.  8)

Painted klown, all my furniture lately for storage are plastic dairy(milk) cases. They say right on them property of that certain dairy, but I'll bet you a beer that every household has at least a few hanging around.I stack 2 with them on their sides and use them for speaker stands putting my speakers at ear level. Then I put either albums or Stereophile magizines inside the milk crates. When it's time to move every thing is all set to go.Price....zilch....sneaking them home.....fun!It's free advertising for the dairy.....Mark Korda

Do you think these are strong enough to support another, full with LPs (a few hundred pounds), on top of it?  I figure I'd need 4 to fit my collection but would have to stack them.
