I currently have an SP 3 and it sounds terrific. However I use it so infrequently for multi channel and home theatre that I will be selling. I plan to purchase a bryston BP 16. This will not have the dac nor the mm stage. Does anyone know or have opinion of differences I can expect in 2 channel audio performance between two assuming I use a bda 1 or send unit to bryston to update with dac and phono stage?

Also...anyone have any idea what this update by bryston would approximately cost?

Hi

The BP 16 is an older design so it would not equal the Stereo performance of the SP3 - which is our newest circuit design.

Also the DAC in the BP16 can only do 96/24 - whereas the SP3 DAC can do 192/24.

the surface mount design (smd) and circuit layout of the new B135 integrated amplifier and the SP3 are the same so the stereo performance of the B135 should be equal to the SP3. if i'd go for a B135 then i'd choose the BDA-1 instead of the integrated dac of the B135 . but James mentioned a BP17 preamplifier which replaces the BP16. and i guess it still takes some time until it will be released.

If a dac is added to the B135, is the unit now considered to be digital product with 5 year warranty or is the warranty 5 for the Dac board and 20 for the analog integrated amp?

Thanks....after asking that question, I was looking at my stacks of Bryston gear and wonder how much longer Bryston will be able to offer a 20 year warranty.  It would seem to me that with the changes in circuit boards and solid state parts over time, repair of even "analog" components in a decade or two will be very difficult.

It should not be a problem. The only reason we have 5 years on the digital is fear that it changes to the point it can not be serviced but has to be replaced.

Hey James,

Any more on the plan for the BP17?  Would you expect it could be out before the winter or perhaps at least by Xmas?

I'm sure you focus right now is full force on your speaker production as well as a the upgrades related to the BDA but I would have thought a BP17 would be quite straight forward to implement.

The BP17 would most likely be an unbalanced (RCA) design.
Using the BHA-1 as a preamp it has XLR balanced in/out's and seems closer to the BP26.

How would the BP17 (does the preamp stage of the B135) compare to the BHA-1 and to the BP26?

Hi Folks,

The BP17 will be out next month we hope and it is a single ended design except it has a set of balanced outs.  The circuitry is the front end (preamp section) of the B135 and is using our new circuit designs.
It has an internal power supply and is fully remote.

The BHA-1 is a totally different product as it is more slanted towards being a low powered amplifier than a preamplifier.
