I have a friend who is an artist on the west coast. On her web site is a background piece by her sister who is a musician, and it sounded pretty good, so I went to
her website and found the most wondrous music. English and Early American ballads (I said something completely different) sung by the most beautiful voice I've heard in a while.
Ellen Gozion
http://www.ellengozion.com/cd.html only has the two CD's, she's not famous, and doesn't appear to be trying to be so, but the music is so heartfelt and touching that I found myself in tears on several cuts. Additionally it's technically excellent, her obviously well trained voice is spot on with inflection and tone. A quote from her site says it better than I,
"Pittsburgh Magazine writes, "Gozion's voice is plaintive and haunting, giving full expression to the emotions held in the song." An independent reviewer praises the record: "Both the vocal and instrumental music on this CD are top quality, with a clarity and simplicity that authenticates these old pieces - her voice has both the purity of a woman singing in the mountains and the excellence of a well-trained voice." (CD Baby)" None of the twangy mountain singer here, just pure and clear expression from someone who loves this music. Also available on iTunes I'm told, but you really want the CD's.
