Do you "repair" off center vinyl?
« on: 11 Sep 2012, 10:05 pm »
Just curious for those records you have that are off center do you "repair" the off center record by enlarging the spindle hole and figuring out a way to reposition it on the platter?

I've never done it, and I've returned ones that were so bad that there was audible wow. But I still have some pressings that are slightly off center that drive me mental when I look at the cartridge  :x

I've read a few posts on another forum saying it wasn't that hard to do if you take your time.

Sometimes only one side of the LP is off-center.  Trying to correct those would just mess up the good side.  I say it's not worth trying to fix.

I've really been trying to find an off center record in my sizable collection, and have not found one. At least nothing that is noticeable visually.

Labels off center, yes. Hole off center, no.

Have I just been extremely lucky?

I think you have been extremely lucky!

The most audible one I have is the Steve Hoffmann 45rpm version of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. Side 2 (and only side 2) is sufficiently off-centre to cause noticeable wow on Christine McVie's piano on 'Songbird' if I forget to adjust it before I play. (There is enough movement available to re-centre without me having done anything to the spindle hole)

regards

Try to find one of these.

Nakamichi TX-1000 -

Automatically centers records.

They are one of the hardest TT's to find for sale. Either owners don't want to part with them, or there just wasn't many produced.

Oh man if only I could, but I love looking at the turntable spin! :peek:

What they say is they make a note saying how to properly center it on the spindle after the hole has been enlarged.

I think I will give this a try with a junk record to see how it goes.

I rarely see records pressed off center with vintage vinyl. It seems my Classic Records pressings are the ones most affected, and these can't be easily replaced these days.
