Am I going to blow up my house?
« on: 10 Sep 2012, 06:54 pm »
I am restoring a Keith Monks record cleaner I bought here on Audio Circle a couple of weeks ago.  After lots of internet searching, I have everything working with 1 problem still.  The vacuum pump motor will not start without a little push on the cooling fan to get it going.  I've cleaned it, lubed it, etc to no effect.  Then I thought about the fact that some motors are capacitor started, so I placed a spare Commie 30 mF cap in the line in front of the motor and it started immediately.  I kept using lower values and decided a 20mF was the lowest value I had that worked.  I have a couple of questions.  The cap has 160B written on it - does this mean it is OK with a 115V US power line?  Also, can I leave this cap in the power line or do I need to get a switch that removes it from the power line as soon as the motor gets going (might be hard for me to figure this switch out)?
