amp for MGIIIa's
« on: 7 Sep 2012, 09:00 pm »
Hi
I gave my brother in law a pair of MGIIIa speakers that I had in storeage for 15 years so still in great shape. He is using his AV receiver to run them and it is only 50 watts per channel (HK brand). I was wanting some suggestions for a better amp (New) that he could look at. The HK has a pre-out that he would use to feed the new amp. He is not an audiophile so it need not be top of the line and his budget reflects that. He wants to spend around $500

thanks in advance

Look for used at that price range, say Parasound, Adcom, with preference for the Parasound HCA1500a.  They're 205 watts per channel in 8ohm, and over 300 in 4ohm.

This one is just a little north of your budget. I had this amp back in the late 90's and loved it. I used it to drive my old Martin Logan SL3's. According to the ad this one was just serviced. The seller has a 100% rating. I recently read the company is getting back in business again.

I would 2nd the Parasound suggestion. I have had a few and really like the JC design and the A21. An A21 is driving some mmg's now.

The 3As were voiced with Audio Research Amps. We ran an AR DR 250 mk2 servo [ 240W/ch ] with great results. Still own both. Also used an AR Classic 60. The Classic 60 even with 60W/ch was glorius.
Today there are many good choices for Maggies wether SS or tubed. The tubed amps will cost ys though as high powered tube amps are costly.
The Parasound will be OK. May I suggest for SS an older used CJ SS Amp.  Great synergy and not expensive. Have fun trying.

Charles:

I'm glad that you noted the AR Classic 60 with Magnepan's of that era, late 1980's to early 1990's.  I'm loving my 1987 2.5's with my Marantz 9's.

Problem is, tube amps are expensive, even older Dyna's, especially if they need to be retubed.
