DISH Network Question
« on: 7 Sep 2012, 07:06 pm »
I would certainly appreciate any insight on whether or not the Hopper/Joey is something I want to "hop" on.

I have been a Dish customer since the early 90's. My current situation is as follows:

722K for the main TV and bedroom TV(older TV, soon to be replaced with a 39" flat panel LCD)
222K for my in-law's LCD TV(keep in mind they are in their 80's and are a PITA when any "change" occurs ).

I know that I will be wanting a separate receiver for the new TV going in our bedroom that is currently using the 722K, as I want HiDef for new TV. So I am faced with having a 722k(main tv), 1 222k for my In-Laws and anther 722k my bedroom.

I also have a very nice antenna mounted in my attic that allows me to receive OTA on the main TV/bedroom TV. I love my OTA but would be willing to give it up if:
a) I can save money by going to the Hopper/Joey
b) Nothing changes for my In-Laws by popping in a Joey for their existing 222K
c) My overall functionality/satisfaction goes up by changing over.

One other bit of info: I am building out my basement this winter and part of it will host a 106" - 120" screen with a front projector. I would probably want a receiver to be connected there as well.

I currently have the best plan Dish offers(minus the movie channels). I am just like any consumer...I want more for less... :thumb:

Anybody who has switched over to the Hopper/Joey system have any words of wisdom?  The Satellite Guys suggested two Hoppers and one Joey with another Joey to be added when I complete my HT in the basement.  Apparently the two Hoppers would go on the main TV and my bedroom TV and the Joey would go in my In-Laws room.

I probably wouldn't be messing with this except for the fact that I now will need a separate receiver for my bedroom as the 722k does not allow HiDef transmission to the 2nd TV(which up to now was not an issue as we had an old TV up there anyway).

Regards,

Randy

UPDATE:

I called DISH and was told that since my wife recently "bundled" our DISH service with our internet with Frontier I was able to take advantage of free HD which is going to save me $10.  I then ordered the DISH 622K receiver which is a solo DVR(as opposed to the 722K).  This extra receiver will cost...you guessed it...$10 a month.  So I get HiDef recording capability for my new bedroom TV and still have the same billing amount.

Gotta luv my better half!! :thumb:

When I get ready to add another receiver for my HT room, I might then consider getting the Hopper/Joey system.

Randy

I have Dish and I think my prior set up was similar to yours.  I had what I think was the 722, it had dual tuners but the feed to a 2nd TV was standard def, and one other HD box in a bedroom.  I'm not sure why they said you'd need two Hoppers, unless it's a wiring thing or storage.  Unfortunately, they aren't wireless, meaning they need cable from the Hopper.  The Hopper does connect to internet wirelessly with a dangle, provided.  The Joey is only about the size of a modem.  I feel they get awfully hot though.  The real advantage for me was the wireless internet, the 1TB of storage, having HD on all TV's.  If you wish they do have that feature where you can pause in one room and resume in another.  Oh, and channels only have one number, no more of that HD channels up on 9,000's.  Dish is suppose to be adding features to the system down the road and any upgrades like that are just downloaded.
