I figured I may not be the only "idiot" trying to do this.  So please guide me through this one step at a time so that others may also learn.

I ordered the following items.

http://www.mini-box.com/M350-universal-mini-itx-enclosure

I had this SSD lying around.

I have a linear 12 volt power supply for the PC and a battery powered 5 volt PS to drive the SOtM USBe card.

Here is a picture.

All the connectors (minus brackets) are in the picture.
What do I do now?  PCIe SOtM card doesn't seem to line up.  Do I need to buy a PCIe cable?

P.S.  I have a Windows 7 pro for OS to be installed.

Sell it all on Craigslist and buy a Mac.    :green:

Did you ever build a PC from parts before?  If not, try advertising on your local Craigslist in gigs for a techie to help you.

No,  I have never built one from scratch before.  Everybody is a virgin once.     I have been told it's not that hard to put these parts together.

Waiting for someone to chime in with the "secrets" of building a PC....

Are you in the MAAC area?  Are you going to Phil A's on Saturday?

Probably.  I still have to clear some items on my honey-do-list but I think I can make it.

If you make it, I can take a look at the pieces after the demo and possibly give you some pointers on the install of the parts.

Just a thought.

Sounds good.  Thanks.  I will bring the parts over.

Great response!  Just like that "other virginity", it is indeed not hard to put the parts together...but, also like the other kind, the first time you do it you may not make sweet music together! :P

It's better your first time to have someone with a little experience to guide you through the tricky bits,  but I am happy to try to help you here if you like.

send me a pm if you didn't get it sorted and I will write up a small guide.

cheers!

Forget a music server unless you want the fun and satisfaction of building it.

In place of a music server, use any old regular Windows PC that is quiet. Then download JPlay from jplay.eu. It is software that turns you PC into a music server by simply running the software. It is a small download and easy to install. It lets you use your PC as a normal PC when you don't run JPlay. It will be the best $125 you will spend for PC playback. In fact, get it if you build your own server. Read the reviews at their site. I use it on an old PC and am very happy with it.

PS: It's nice to see I am not alone here. I mean, idiocy loves company. BFF's.

Just an update to my earlier post and a fairly thorough reversal. According to people who know more than I do about music servers, they do make a difference, even with JPlay. That's from the people who developed JPlay. So, I stand corrected and that's good.   :thumb:

In fact, J of JPlay says that everything in the reproduction chain makes a difference, e.g. usb wire.

Also, I read that Windows 8 is noticeably better at sound reproduction that earlier versions.
