Easiest way to build a VPN at home?
« on: 7 Sep 2012, 02:51 pm »
Hello guys,

What is the easiest way to build a VPN at home? I currently have a router (Linksys E3000 with DD-WRT) and a NAS (Qnap TS-209 II Turbo), both connect to a switch. I have 3 computers connected to my network. What software do I need? Can I set it up on my router or NAS? Or do I need an extra PC to act like a server? thanks.

Are you trying to access this remotely from the internet? If so, you need to configure the VPN in the DD-WRT router. Info here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/VPN and here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/VPN_%28the_easy_way%29_v24%2B

I am interested to know as well.  Do you really need a full blown VPN?  I think this is only really necessary if you have many computers on your private network and you need to remotely access many of them in various ways.  Otherwise I think it is more secure and convenient to open up specific services to specific hosts on your router with port forwarding.  Personally I have a file server with SSHd for not only file transfers but tunneling other services, namely Remote Desktop.  All it requires is a simple client like PuTTY that doesn't need to be installed on the remote machine, only 1 port opened up on the router, and traffic is encrypted.
