Teac TN-400 may be in the house soon!

Way back in the day, a friend and I each bought one of these when Federated (a Southern California stereo chain from the 70's and 80's) was closing them out for about $100 each.

They were sold just the table. You had to build your own plinth, arm board, etc.

Here's one someone mounted on several layers of wood with a Dynavector tonearm -

The reason for the closeout, as I remember it, was that Teac was being sued by the company that developed the 'Magna Float' system, that slightly elevated the platter to take stress off the bearing. Teac incorporated the technology, including using the 'Magna Float' name without permission. They were forced to stop production and sell off their stock.

Their loss was our gain.

I sold my original one to a friend when I went the belt drive direction years ago. It is still going strong with a Denon DA-402 arm. My other friend hasn't used his for years. He went out and bought an ION TT with USB to burn his old vinyl to MP3 (I shudder at the thought) against my recommendations.

Looks like he is willing to part with his TN-400 for cheap. His is mounted on a hardwood plinth that we built for it 30+ years ago.

I can't wait to get one of these beasts back in my possession! I've already got some interesting plans for a double level plinth in mind...

Did TASCAM (Teac professional) ever have a TT? Just wondering, as I had never seen nor heard of one. This deck looks awfully professional, if you ax me.

Not sure about Tascam.

I believe the TN-400 was designed for professional use. But it became somewhat of an audiophile cult TT when they appeared at Federated.

I remember quite a few audiophile systems in the LA area that used these TTs.

I've seen one on eBay recently go for almost $900 on a simple wood base with no arm.

Here's the manual for the table:
http://www.vinylengine.com/library/teac/tn-400.shtml

Has a 5.28 lb platter.  Cool looking table with a 20 pole, 60 slot DC servo motor.  $900 seems a bit high though.

I don't think Tascam made any tables.  They are the professional division of Teac and make recording/pro equipment.
