EMU 0404 USB - outputs broken?
« on: 1 Sep 2012, 04:53 pm »
The front headphone output only gives sound from the left channel. The two outputs at the back (left in picture) give mono sound from both headphones drivers. The 3.5mm output works fine. How can I fix this?

Unfortunately you don't have a good option.  I have a 0404, 0202, and Tracker-Pre and they all have problems with the headphone jacks.

The front panel headphone jack is pretty cheap, and it's an "enclosed" type so you can't get inside to increase the spring tension on the connections.  It's the preferred output jack since it has much lower output impedance than the back panel jacks.  (About 20 ohms vice 600 ohms.)

The back panel 1/4" jacks are balanced three conductor types so you'll only get one channel.  Is that what you meant?

I would continue to use the 3.5mm output jack.  It's output resistance is 560 ohms, but should work okay for most applications.

Cheers,

Dave.

That's too bad Patrick, and ironic as I've also started having problems with my 0404. In my case it seems the XLR mic inputs are no longer getting signal to the unit. The lowest signal level light just barely flickers even when I tap my finger on the face of my mic. The 48V phantom power light is on so I can't figure out what's happening.

BTW, the pot for the headphone volume IMO is absolute junk. Mine is very noisy. I was thinking of taking it part and spraying some tuner cleaner in there.
