Wireless monitor and keyboard wanted
« on: 23 Aug 2012, 08:09 pm »
Because of my home's configuration I would like to have my monitor and keyboard in a different room from the computer.  Does anyone have familiarity with wireless adapters for monitors for Windows equipment?

I also need a good wireless keyboard.  The one I have claims a range of 33 feet but after experimenting with it at 21 feet I found out that assumes no walls or large furniture in the way.  I even tried it with an extension cable on the receiving end to move the receiver into the open. Still no luck connecting if there was a wall in the way.  Straight line-of-sight worked "if" the keyboard front faced the monitor.

This is not something I have to do but it is something that I would like to do very much if the appropriate equipment is available.

And yes, I know, wireless monitor+keyboard=laptop

If you have an iPad, you can run one of several remote console apps.

No experience with wireless video, do you have any way to run a video cable?

For the keyboard is your current one RF Bluetooth or other?
RF should provide the best coverage.

And if you cant get wireless keyboard from your pc to your other room...would the wireless video work?

Thanks,  I know about LogMeIn and TeamViewer.  That is not what I am trying to do.  I want my computer, printer, external drive and wire mess in one room and the monitor and keyboard in another.

Sent from my iPad.  :D

My keyboard is "other".  I have never seen a long video cable.  Do they exist?  As for would video work via wireless, that is what I am asking.

Closest thing to what you want that I've ever heard of is something like a Viewsonic thin client tablet or terminal.  I don't know of anyone who makes wireless extenders for video and keyboard that have more than a few meters of range, at best.

Beyond that, everyone seems to use remote sessions on laptops, pads, or things like the Viewsonics.

The lower cost video extenders seem to be mostly short-range line of sight.

C2G Wireless USB to VGA Extender
Resolution: 1600 x 1200 UXGA
Maximum Range: 30ft. line of sight

Imation Link Wireless HD Audio/Video Extender
Resolution: 1080p still, 720p video
Maximum Range: 30ft. line of sight

There are others that have longer range capablitity and can transmit through walls but are much more expensive:

Avocent LV3500W Longview Wireless Extender
Resolution: 1024 x 768 XGA
Maximum Range: 300 ft. line of sight, 150 ft. through walls
Price: $650 (Discontinued)

Gefen Wireless VGA Extender LR
Resolution: 1280x 1024 SXGA
Maximum Range: 100 ft. through walls
Price: $599 MSRP, $380 street price

How long do you need it?  I use a 50' to connect my monitor when I need to use one and USB wireless keyboard/mouse.

You can get any length really.  http://www.cablesforless.com/Male-to-Male-SVGA-Cables-C227.aspx

Everyone, thanks for all of the information.

Woodsyi, thanks for the link.  That looks like a very affordable solution for my monitor.  I would rather not have cable on my floor but for that price I could deal with it and give it a try.  I even found a connector on the same site that I could use to connect a 25' cable to my existing one for the perfect length.  50' is the next size and much too long.

That leaves my keyboard as a problem.  My preferred location is not line-of-sight and there is a wall and fireplace in the way.  Right next to the wall is a large open arch but not line-of-sight between keyboard and computer. My current keyboard with trackpad is 2.4G but from what I read Bluetooth does not like walls either.

What about using a USB active extender to bring the receiver (dongle) in line-of-sight?  I am assuming your 2.4G wireless is USB.

Yes, I am uisng USB. Line-of-sight is tough due to my house architecture.  I could get it a lot closer using an extender.  Do you think that would work?  I notice the keyboard will work at apx 15' when it is facing the receiver but if I turn the keyboard around it does not work. My preferred location is, of course, bass ackwards.

I don't know for sure as I have not tried but it should work.

You can also just get a 50' active extender and go wired.  No worries about reception and you are already running a VGA cable.  You can run it side by side.  I guess you can still use the wireless if you want to put the dongle right next to the keyboard.

I saw a Kimber cable with USB/VGA together but it only went 15' and more expensive.  I am guessing it's only 15 since it's a passive extender.  I think you need active to go longer.
