That looks as though the ring is NOT on the record but under it.

Right!  Apparently this picture was taken at a CES Show in 2007.  So, looks like the person(s) demoing the VPI table didn't know how to install the ring.  A shame!   :duh:

Was this the VPI room? Many speaker/amp manufacturers use VPI tables to demo their gear. Harry goes to most shows and can't imagine him doing that. Can't be good for the VTA either.

It might sound better that way, make the LP decouple from those dull sounding acrylic platters  :icon_twisted:

To play devils advocate, I have one or two LPs in my collection that are "undersized" so that the ring does not fit on them and just slides down the platter to the stopping point. I leave it on anyways when I play this LPs because my SDS has been adjusted with the added weight of the ring and center weight.

I got to thiniing about a ring +/- weight for my Classic I after getting a very clean but slightly warped LP yesterday from eBay. (Mick Fleetwoods Zoo, Im Not Me)

Can I use the ring on my Classic I without SDS ?(I dont have SDS)

I use either the supplied clamp or I have the TTW weight/clamp which does not seem to effect the speed.

Thanks for response.  PM me if you like to keep this thread clean.

I used the ring and center weight on my Scoutmaster before I ever owned the SDS so I see no significant issues why you couldn't use the ring with your Classic. I calibrated my speeds with the weight of the ring, center weight, and needle drag all in place on my Aries 3 so now I just make sure to use them just in case.

you should be fine, as long as the platter is spinning at the right speed.  I used it on my Classic and didn't notice any Slow down in RPM.  At least by ear anyways. :thumb:

Which will yield the larger sonic result?

SDS or Ring?

Having both...I would say SDS as that stabilizes speed...and ring is good, but the clamp system is good enough, unless record is really warped!

Bingo...........Kevin you are correct, while the ring is designed to help flatten by contact on the outer edge of the LP there are Lp's were that won't work.

I suspect in the demo room that Tuan's pic portray's there may well be a bit of laziness going on !

As Tuan said, the SDS is superb but I must admit I like having both.

Haven't sprung for the SDS, but have liked what the PLC has done for my system. Speed stability and makes it easier to insure that both 45 and 33 1/3 RPM are spot on (not usually the case by just moving the belt to a different sized pulley, IME).

How much difference above the PLC would an SDS make?

If I had a Periphery Ring, I would put it on the table along these lines:

VPI's official line on that is ring first, SDS second in that order.

The Classic is already more speed stable than the HW-19 and much of the Scout line I've heard.  I'm really sensitive to this as I listen to a lot of solo piano and except for the slightest deficiency versus the JVC direct drive reference in that regard, it's stellar and solid sounding for speed.

I assume a ring and an SDS is a pretty great standard of playback for USD$4500. But it's good enough for my needs with ring alone, tho.

Thanks ChairGuy

Can someone take some pics of how the ring really works?  Is it another time consuming step?
