Curtains to replace a door?
« on: 22 Aug 2012, 12:37 pm »
I’m rearranging my room, so my left speaker will now be a couple feet from the door opening.

I’m looking for a quick and easy but sufficient way to replace the door.  I’m considering heavy curtains on either side of the door jam, but I’m not sure how well this will isolate the room.

Does anyone have experience with this?  I haven’t visited a fabric shop yet, but if you’re aware of something that would work and is sold online, please post a link.

Thanks

How about a quilt or something similar to a furniture pad?  You want damping or reflection?  I installed a glass bi-fold door that I close when listening, but it doesn't much cut down on sound going into Her Majesty's TV room.   :duh:

The primary goal is to keep sound from leaving the room.  I'm going to hang a couple quilts today as an experiment.

Curtains/quilt (fabric) has virtually zero STC (sound transfer coefficient) rating, so you'd lose isolation and the room would behave as if there was an clear opening there (imbalance from opposite side?) except for very limited reduction at selected frequency(ies) for the fabric itself.

Is it the door swing that is the problem.  In that case consider revising the door swing (would take carpentry skills).

Door swing is the issue, and changing it is an option.   I was looking for something cheaper and easier though.

You can use cloth wrapped MLV that will do a bit better job than just a quilt or curtain.  Still not going to provide full isolation and by the time you pay for the MLV, changing the door would likely be cheaper.

Searching MLV lead me to this.  These look like they would work, but i haven't found a price yet.

Looks like a friend of a friend who does this type of work will modify my door for around $50. Problem solved  :thumb:
