Need help choosing a multimeter

Just for general hobbyist and maintenance purposes. Other than the usual it should at least be able to read "mA". "Capacitance" would be nice too.

Right now I'm considering low end Flukes, but which?

A friend of mine just got this:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=390-500

This is amazing for only $8! And it seems to work fine. Of course, there are better models. :D

Sears has a digital model that lists for about $20.  Very robust, fits the hand really well, removable rubber case.  I have two and really like them.  Often on sale for about $15.

Otis, what is your budget for this? It's never wrong to buy a Fluke.

Hi all Audio Circle members.

Fluke (I own one) or Beckman (I had one) are both good investment,
they will last for several decades...

I also now own a Sears, however,
will Sears still be in business next year ?

I have this Steren unit and it's solid and low cost.  FWIW all reviews are 4 or 5 stars so far, so it could be that Quality Control is actually okay on these units.

Hi thunderbrick and all Audio Circle members.

How come KMart will take care of Sears products warranty ? ? ?

Is there a (Secret) relation between Sears and KMart ?

Hi Jerry and all Audio Circle members.

Thanks for the info, I did not know that.

Then, what's the rumour about Sears not surviving the recession?

I've owned a Fluke 83 for about 23 years.
Half of which the unit was used professionally.

Still going strong.

I've used a Fluke 77 for 30 years.

For amateur use, I'm sure the PE or something from Sears would be fine. If you want something you can pass on to the next generation, buy a Fluke.

I recently sent my Fluke 88 back for calibration.  I've had it so long that the serial # on it is before they started to keep track of them.  The person that issued me the RMA was shocked as she said she has been there for many years and has never come across one that old.  $149 and it has a new screen, recall and works perfectly.   :thumb:

Can't go wrong with a Fluke.

If so, replace any electrolytic caps, especially in the power supply, before you even try turning it on.  I had one back in the day, as well.
