Had to do something "audio"
« on: 20 Aug 2012, 01:52 am »
So the factory stereo in the PT has kinda been junk from the beginning but I always had something better to do with my money.  With the combination of a couple of birthday gift cards I bought a new Kenwood Excelon KDC-X596 from Crutchfield.  While it is customary to show the process of such a project I didn't think to because it was kinda boring.  Crutchfield gives you the installation parts and instructions.  The longest process was me soldering and heatshrinking the wiring harness.  In the car it took me 10 minutes from start to finish removing the old head unit and install the new.  And now this is in my dash:

What I find so incredible about this whole process is the cost.  $135 for a Kenwood head unit with HD radio, CD, iPod and Pandora controls built in, decent power and 3 pair of pre-amp outputs with 5v outputs, built in electronic crossovers and detachable face and a 2 year warranty.  And again that price included the dash kit, wiring harness and antenna adaptor.

First impressions?  Though I'm still working with the factory speakers I can say that it is a bit more clear and definitely has more power.  Not sure about the low end yet.  Have to play with the adjustments a bit more and or the eq settings before I can say it needs help.  Yeah, speaker replacements are on the "to do" list but I'll roll with it for now.

Looks like fun!

Installing a new head unit is the first thing I do after buying a car, granted, I usually buy kinda crappy used cars though.   I'm a fan of crutchfield too, mainly for the reasons you cite.

A few months ago I had the displeasure of renting an HHR for a month, I think it's similar to your car.  Horrid handling and reputation, but I couldn't help but think of all the audio possibilities with that type of interior.  To be fair though, it's a killer car design for what you do, so easy to haul things.

Is it time to find space in the back for a pair of 12's?    :green:

Matt,

The PT is not going to challenge your WRX any time soon.  I did have to spring for new tires which has completely changed the way the car rides and sounds.  Now I can hear the stereo over the road noise.
12"s?  I don't see that happening.  Especially if I'm going to keep using the car for the biz.  But they do have a box designed for a 10" to fit the storage compartment in the rear.  It could happen.  Door separates first...

Thanks Matt. It's taken a while, but I'm slowly getting you guys to come around to my way of thinking on the whole photograph thing.
Congrats on the install though, that's cool. Are you using a smart phone to store tunes, or an external HDD, or ... ??

Bob,
I'm still playing with options.  Mostly I'll use the iPhone since I can use the mp3's, Pandora and tune-in radio app directly via USB.  *Audio interest alert*  Using the USB connection for the iPhone bypasses the DAC in the iPhone using the 24 bit DAC in the head unit instead.  I'm getting ready to head to Indy for the CEDIA convention so I will probably load a flash drive for the road too.  Any new tech you want info on from the show?  I know...take pictures
